Soda Bottle Rooting Pot Results

This is for the recyclers or the frugal among us.

I made a rooting pot out of a 2 liter soda bottle last winter. I cut off the rounded top, bent the sides square, and used a soldering iron to make holes in the bottom.

I started a Portuguese #1 on January 1st and potted it into a 3 gallon pot today.

I was able to skip the up-pot step from using a fig pop or cup.

I didn't see any problems resulting from the clear container. This fig is one of my best, and had a very nice root ball.

It was easy to remove. I just used my pocket knife to slit the sides and peeled it like a banana.

Much more stable than the 4"x 12" trees pots, and I could tell what was going on with the clear sides.

Cheap and effective.

I’m a fan of using 1 liter bottles cut about 2” from the bottom, then top nested into the bottom with a strip of handi-wipe or microfiber towel extending into bottom to form a self- watering system. Haven’t tried it for figs ( I do fig pops), but it’s great for other cuttings & deep rooted seedlings.
