Soaking seeds in peroxide

I was reading up on fig breeding and when it came to planting the seeds.
They mentioned better germination when they soaked the seeds in peroxide.
I looked it up and seems it is common practice for planting seeds.
Anyone here soak seeds of any kind in peroxide before planting?

What is the peroxide supposed to do? Is it mostly to kill off any pathogens?

I normally allow my tomato seeds to ferment for a while for this purpose. It's pretty gross after a while. Not sure if it really helps.... still I do it.
