As the "ends" of your "cuttings" also contain a ring of exposed cambium, I suggest you bury these pieces a bit deeper, so you can capitalize on that "rooting opportunity" as well. Did you scrape and hormone-treat the undersides of the nodes?

I tried to scrape and dust with Hormodin for any part that is touching the sand.
I will have to keep that first part in mind. It definitely makes sense.
