Rooting Blackberries

Does anyone know if you can store blackberry cuttings in the fridge like fig cuttings? Or should they be rooted now? And if now, can you do them outside and let them root over winter or should they be in controlled environment with spring like conditions simulated? Thanks

What are your low temps? I almost wonder if you can dig them into the ground now. They seem to send roots easily. I don't remember mine signifying this season and never have stored any, so no comment on storage.

It very rarely gets below 20 degrees here but it does happen. I think the low the next couple of nights is in the 20’s.

blackberries are easy, id start them inside so you can move em outside the same. they wont grow much vertically this year.

Put them in a bucket of water. Or a cup, depending on the size. In my own personal experience they haven’t done well storing when cut :( I almost always cut mine end of winter and root immediately but if you can’t root / grow them now just keep them alive in a cup of water until you’re ready. They will still grow green growth this way though

Do you fig pop the blackberry cuttings?
i actually dont propagate via cutting anymore for blackberries, but a fig pop should work fine. i never used fig pops before figs though. I just would do it in a pot of soil in the dark. Now im on the other end and i give away a lot of blackberry and raspberry cuttings every year. One thing about rubus is they SPREAD. root cuttings are a lot easier than top cuttings, but they all root. good. i usually tip root my thornless for people at the end of season.

Blackberries are so much easier to root, nearly impossible to kill haha you can just stick them in a pot. When I pruned mine I stuck about 60 cuttings in one gallon pots and they all rooted well. Sold the one gallons on marketplace for like $5 they sold quick! Some even free 😆
Is it safe to do it now outside though in winter?

Do you think they are that easy only in the warm weather, and more difficult now in the winter inside?

They will root with the fig pop method. Same everything (moisture, warmth) - but faster :).

Oh, and they like peat (bc of acidity) - so if you are used to doing peat/perlite rooting mix and want to pamper them, go higher % on peat.
Yeah I forgot to mention acidity! Sorry to OP and thanks to you for reminding haha. They’re just like blueberries / any brambles really, they love acidity so peat works best :)
