Question about Black Manzanita Fig Productivity

Looks like I’m getting some figs pushing. No pinching, but the heat popped up this past week… maybe a similar stressor that could induce fig formation?🤷‍♂️ anyway I’ll try to update how they progress.

It sure looks like a delicious fig, but maybe it needs special environmental conditions to fruit

Finally, I picked these ripe Black Manzanita figs, deep black skin, rich red pulp, soft & sweet. Harvest joy!

Beautiful figs!!! Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I've heard some really good things about this fig from a few respected fig growers. My favorite type of fig flavor.
Judging by the fruit set time, mine is about 3-4 weeks behind yours. I can't wait to try my first BM.

This is great tasting variety, if you let it hang little it tastes even better. Only thing I dont like about this variety is that when the fruits get a little bigger some of them fall off very easily with a gentle touch, causing it to not ripen fully. These were picked the other day.
Some fruits are smaller, some are bigger and some are even in different shapes.

Love the colors on this one. Beautiful fig. The fruit drop may go away. I recall my I-258 did the same initially last season. Even a gentle touch or wind would make figs drop prematurely. But that went away later in the season and this season I have not noticed that.

Can you provide the stats on this tree? When did you wake it up, when did the fruit begin to set, when did you take it outside, and when did it begin to ripen for you? Thanks.

Worth noting… I had similar problems for a long time with some figs. Many of us feed with synthetics like miracle grow or jacks etc, etc. most Lois that stuff (while great) doesn’t contain any calcium or iron….. the lack of which and seriously hinder fruit formation and production.

As of late I’m using cal-mag but there are lots of other good sources of micros. Alaska Fish, chicken manure etc

I woke up this tree around February 15th in my grow tent. I don't remember exactly when it set fruit but I don't think it was later than 30 days after waking it up. I than took them outside into my pop up tent by the first week of May. By first week of June it was out of the tent and by June 17th I had my first fig. That first fig wast the best but still a 7/10 for me. I still have figs ripening.

Why a low score on taste? What's missing and what don't you like about this fig?

It tasted weird without too much flavor, maybe it was because it ripened in mid june without too much heat or sun or maybe i picked it.too.early from excitement. Still was not bad. My first two smiths didnt taste good either but after the second one they all tasted great.

I see. Hopefully the rest taste much better. This one is supposed to be pretty good, but we'll see. Any new awesome varieties you are trying out this season? A couple of my grafted CDD Grise swelled up. Can hardly wait.

Looking like my first really good year with CDDG. The tree is looking better and fruit forming better than ever before.... It's my 3rd year in with this variety

That's good to know. I'd love to compare notes on this one. I rooted 4 CDD varieties this season, but did it too late for them to ripen this year. But the 2-3 that I also grafted should ripen. I'll see how I like them and decide then whether I want to keep one or two trees, I think 4 CDDs here is too much, or I will graft them all on other trees to have some for a change.

I assume you've tasted it before. How did you like it?

I should have 3 CDD's ready for comparison this year. I need to check the herd

I am looking forward to trying a few varieties this summer. Crozes, Corynth, Black Celeste and Campaniere. Maybe Sister Madelines Green Greek. I have 4 on the tree that was rooted in February but not 100% sure if they will ripen or not.
For next year I am hoping to taste some Sister Madeline's Green Greek, San Mateo, Swiss Black Candy and Green Michurinska. These were cuttings this year, they grew well up to 7ft tall. With an early start I am hoping to get some nice branching and some fruit on them.

What do you know, I found a ripe BM. I could have let it ripen a little more I suppose, but it was pretty close and I had to try it. It's the first fig off the tree. Also, my very first Manzanita. Looks like this one was set way before other figs, which are a good 3-4 weeks away from ripening.
