Question about Black Manzanita Fig Productivity

Hello fig friends,

I’ve been growing a Black Manzanita fig tree from a cutting I got directly from Alastair a few years ago.
The tree is big and looks super healthy… but it has never given me a single fig.

So now I’m wondering: Is this variety just slow to produce?

Would love to hear your experience with this one!
How long did your Black Manzanita take to fruit? And does it produce well for you?

Many thanks!

Make sure you are not giving it a fertilizer that is very high in Nitrogen. It will cause great leafy green growth but no fruit.

I got some from a second year tree last yr.
This year it seems to be behind most other trees in growth.
I thinknit may have some fig bud mites...checking it this weekend.

Either way it was not selfish with figs in yr 2.
And growth last year was not amazing but not lacking either.

My Raspberry Latte was exactly like this. No fruit :( Had to go....

Figs that formerly grew in a warmer climate tend to perform very poorly for me. Flip side - figs that formerly grew in a colder climate excel here!

I have one in a pot that’s a first year tree for me. It was in a one gallon pot when I got it. It’s grown vigorously but no fig set so far.

That’s a great point, thank you! I’ve been using a balanced organic fertilizer, but I’ll double-check the nitrogen content just in case. I really appreciate the reminder.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I hope it’s not fig bud mites, good luck with your inspection this weekend. It’s encouraging to hear it wasn’t stingy with figs in year 2, even without explosive growth.

Sorry to hear that about your Raspberry Latte. It’s interesting how climate history plays such a big role. I’m in a tropical area, so I’m curious to see which varieties really thrive long-term here.

Mine from dfoster put on figs last season (2nd year), but they didn’t ripen before the end of the season. It’s put on breba already this season.
That’s great to hear about the breba this season! Too bad about the figs not ripening last year, but it sounds like your tree is moving in the right direction. Appreciate you sharing your timeline.

After carefully reading through everyone’s experiences, I applied a full pinching on all active growing tips of my Black Manzanita.
And today, I noticed the first signs of figlets forming!
