Portuguese Unknowns

I preroot all my cuttings in water. My Portuguese Unknowns were put into water on the 18th. I checked them today and there are lenticles already growing. Within a few days they will have to be potted up.

Edit: #1, #2 and #4 are the first ones to be growing.

I am electronically challenged when it comes to dealing with posting pictures.

When I see tiny pointy tips anywhere on a cutting, I pot up. Sometimes they poke out of the lenticles. My belief is this is an easier transition to potting mix. Some folks leave a cutting in water for months and allows long roots to grow. This method works for me.

In water do the roots start out looking almost like a pimple with a light spot if not from the lenticles?

I don't follow everything that the host does. I use glass jars, change my water multiple times during the day and use warm water. I learned that warm water, not hot, is the secret to getting them to root faster. Fig cuttings like warm environments and people use heating pads, so why not warm water? The glass retains the heat too.

If you like the idea of prerooting in water, watch all the videos on the topic on youtube. I did and learned something new with each one. I remember somebody adding fertilizer to the water which I thought about doing, but I change my water too often and it would be a waste of fertilizer.

You do what you think is best and don't be afraid to try different things. Keep in mind too that not everybody's water is the same so your results may be different.

Just potted up some Portuguese Unk this afternoon, varieties #1 and #4. I cannot believe how quickly they put out lenticels. I am crossing my fingers that they will continue to put out roots.

Anybody else seeing signs of life on their cuttings?

I fig popped them on 12/19, one day after you started yours in water, so I have Portuguese cuttings on the brain, too, lol.

I saw my very first roots of the Portuguese Unknown class (of mine) come from Portuguese's Unk #1 yesterday. I just took this pic for you, and I’m actually surprised how much the roots grew in one day.

That is awesome. I am sorry. Must have missed it. Roots grow quickly over night. I marked a clear cup one day and was surprised the following day how far the new root went.

Variety #4 was definitely the most vigorous mother tree. However, that also resulted in cuttings that tended to be much thicker. It will be interesting to see if those thicker cuttings still root quickly.

I checked this morning, and Portuguese #5 is breaking bud nicely, in that “roots are imminent way”, not that “just pushing green due to the cutting’s energy” way, so I expect roots shortly.

So other than #1, no visible roots on any of them yet. @Opiem10 has a good memory- #4 is a log, so will be slower to get started.

But I only kept one cutting of each variety and spread the wealth and regifted the others, so I only have one cutting to go off for its growth characteristics.
