Pine Straw

I've used pine bark mulch for decades. It does a great job of weed suppression and moisture retention for me; but I put it down pretty thick. Pine straw probably works just as well. I just don't like the looks of it. Most of my neighbors can't resist the 5 for $10 dyed mulch.

I see a lot of people using that dyed stuff and the tire mulch around there fruits and vegetables.
I stick with the natural stuff.
