Paw Paw Grafting

Grafting can be tricky but you’re learning. This year was a learning year for me as well. I had my best success with bark grafts. Cleft grafts worked ok but the bark grafts seemed to take and grow better. I’m going to try pawpaw next year.

Yeah, I am definitely learning a lot. Paw Paws seem pretty easy to graft. Next year I hope to be able to graft some persimmons...I hear they are harder to graft. As I think you mentioned earlier, I may try bark grafts on those...or at least some of them.

I did Fuyu Persimmons this year and while some failed, most survived. The best being bark grafts. All scions about the same size but the larger root stock I did bark grafts on did the best.

Just a quick update on the Jerry's Big Girl graft done on May 18th. I took the rubber band off. You can see in the picture where the rubber band left impressions...I think it was a good time to remove it. It looks like the graft union is healing well and growing well. I should have taken a picture of the whole tree, but forgot...it is growing very well. After taking the picture, I re-wrapped the graft union in parafilm to keep moisture out and hopefully help it to continue to heal and grow.

Dang Randy, that graft looks flawless, excellent work!
