My First Rooting Cutting

This is my first attempt at rooting a cutting so try not to laugh if I did it all wrong. When my Celeste started leafing out, one branch was much taller than the rest of the tree. I thought that cutting that branch shorter will cause other branches to grow down lower and keep the tree more compact. I removed all the leaves from this cutting, then scraped off a little of the bark on the bottom end. Then I dipped that end in root hormone. I put waterproof wood glue on the top ends to keep it from drying out. Then I stuck it into some potting mix. I put some triple super phosphate into the soil and then added a little water. I'm trying to keep the soil from being too moist and not mess with it until I know it has well established roots. I guess the new leaves sprouting out are a good sign. Does that mean roots are growing?

No laughter here - you should have seen mine.

How long ago did you start rooting? The leaves can be a sign of a healthy tree. If they hold for the next few weeks, they will be a sign for roots and water uptake.

Update on this cutting. It seems to be growing. I put perlite on the surface of the soil because I saw that the guy on Lazy Dog youtube channel does that to keep the gnats from laying eggs. I don't know if it works but I guess I will find out.

Yeah the course perlite break the wings on gnats and prevents them from digging into your soil and laying larvae egg which are your real enemy. A thick 1-2” layer usually works, either perlite or sand which is probably easier to find

You did a fantastic job rooting your cutting. It looks very healthy. I love watching Lazy Dog Farm channel. He’s got a really nice farm there in Georgia.

My dad did the same thing when he wacked his tree back a few weeks ago. This branch is like 3.5 feet tall and was leafing out really well. Had a ton of roots. So I threw it in ground and it seems to be very happy in its new home. Weathers been crazy over in DFW lately, so the ground is pretty moist for it. Hoping to get some good growth on it this year and all that jazz.
