My 1st fig

Something I didn't think I would have this year. It's a Chicago Hardy from the big tree gifted to me from the nursery. My very first ever CH. Hopefully the birds won't find it. Not quite ready yet but getting there. Also my 3 Jujube

that’s awesome. You should cover that fig with an organza bag just to play it safe. I’ve lost about ten first figs to birds this year

This morning 5 more CH figs are beginning to turn color. When I saw the first one ripening I removed the shade cloth, probably was a good decision. Later I’ll put the organza bags on them.

Me too. It get’s lost in all the noise, but when grown in well draining soil in ground (above grade), and dried in the tree, it’s a wonderful productive fig that’s top notch. There’s a reason it’s everywhere, but if it’s grown in waterlogged poor draining soil it suffers from mold/souring and moisture damage. Grow it right and it rewards!

Funny how yesterday only 1 fig was ripening now today several more are. Does CH normally ripen this early?

Me three. A well grown and well ripened CH is just solid good. My CH tree has also been among the most reliable, productive, and consistently ripening all of it's figs. Once it starts ripening, it just keeps on going, one after another.

Too bad, our neighborhood birds' appreciation of CH has really increased in the last two weeks as well!

Those look amazing, Teresa! Yes, my tree has started ripening them now in PA, so I think you are in for some yummy days ahead

One of my favorite varieties! Those look good...they are really coming along. Won't be long now. The Chicago Hardy I have is my only in ground fig tree and it does great. Mine aren't quite ripening yet.

Heck yeah. It is going to be a great Fig Frolic again this year! I keep thinking "how could they get any better?" and then the next one is even better.

And getting back to Chicago Hardy...I'm going to have 5 or 6 of this variety for the White Elephant (giveaway) table at the Fig Frolic this year!
