Mango and I 258

So, I’ve never really let I 258 actually really dry on the tree (I’ve let it shrivel a bit and get very soft and wrinkly, but not dry), until now - accidentally. Notice the corky and very wrinkly skin. It dropped from the tree today, and smelled and looked wonderful. I ate the first half - the skin was leathery and a little crunchy but had nice mouthfeel and wasn’t unpleasant and the pulp was jammy and full of berry flavor with the perfect sweetness. It had the normal wonderful I-258 flavors (and the strongest aroma I’ve smelled on an I-258), then it transitioned to some citrus notes, followed by the most amazing flavor - it was unmistakable - Atulfo Mango. I think the flavor was in the skin. Was I hallucinating? I ate the other half. No. Same thing. It was the most amazing I-258 that I’ve ever had. This tree this year is amazing me - it was early in the pot. It’s been pumping out figs regularly (except the hottest stretches). And now this. Has anyone else ever noticed this on a similarly dried I-258? This experience, if repeatable, would make I-258 my number 1 fig hands down (I don’t have any Black Madeira types to compare). Oh - and this year I’ve had little to no splitting - it is being grown in a SIP. It is a fourth leaf tree.

Ooooh - nice!

I've tried growing I -258 but it has always ended up dying on me (cuttings rotted or rooted cutting dies) so I never could tell you what it taste like but my Rionon Santana also developes an over ripe mango flavor to it and I see SOME almost similarities between I-258 and RS.

I'm starring to think maybe RS is an I -258 seedling.

Maybe one day I'll do a genetic test to see if RS has I-258 genes (should the cost be low; which I doubt).

I just spent some time looking up all the info I could on RS. You’re the finder of this seedling! Cool. And Toronto Joe did manage to get a cutting to test, and it looks common!!! . I’ll have to get a cutting from you someday after your fame dies down. Lol. Looks like a winner - Breba, Early main, relatively small eye, and common. I think you need to test it in a humid poor climate like Northern VA (Trying Joe’s original approach - but I don’t have the Mod angle). Congratulations.

@Kid Fig Awesome. Well, when you’re ready to try with I258 again lemme know and I’ll try to hook you up.

Awesome - appreciate it and if my Black Madeira continues to do poorly then I'll have to take you up on that offer (Black Madeira does not like pots unless it's like 15/20 gallons or more).

WELL - flattery will get you everywhere (lol).

Not making promises but I might have some wood left to send you this Fall - I'll be setting 2 airlayers for next year (one to sell/trade and one back-up) and I have 3 individuals I'm sending cuttings to so might not be much left BUT next Fall I'll reserve a pair for you.

As far as trialing in a humid zone I sent some to a certain Fig "despot" but I think they didn't make it so I would be interested on how they do in Northern VA.

Will send pm as reminder...

Fig “despot” - lol. @Kid Fig thank you! I’m patient and can wait. I’m also a good grafter so even a few buds on a scion that most folks would toss can be useful (if lignified well so they store until late winter/spring.)

In addition to common... if my experience so far is any indication then it also appears quite early. I don't have many other mains that have ripened yet.
