I used to live next to this lovely place in Toronto. It has some really good Italian groceries that are hard to find anywhere else here. Visited it yesterday and snapped some pictures for you fig lovers. No, I did not buy any of these, but they sure were nice to look at :) Happy New Year, Y'all!

I haven’t been too Lady York in quite a while. I still have a lot of figs in the freezer myself, but I have to admit the ones from Calabria caught my eye. I don’t know if you’ve ever been in the spring when they open the garden centre out back… they often sell fig trees. No idea what they are or where they come from.

I assume you went to Grande Cheese Factory since you were in the neighborhood? :)

@TorontoJoe Those Calabrian figs did look good. I was at their garden center many times but never paid attention to fig trees, as that was before I began growing figs. I didn't go to Grande Cheese, but I did visit Nobel and got some Piave.

I anxiously await your review of the Piave. The blue is really good too but the red Stravecchio is one of my favourites

The Grande Cheese Factory? It’s torture, pure torture. Although we have one here in Stuart’s Draft. It’s called The Cheese Shop. image.jpg

Oh my... I know how much you like it. :) I got stravecchio as I love aged cheese. I liked it a lot, but I preferred the 30 - 72-month-aged PR if comparing side by side, which I did last night. Piave was sweeter, softer, and a touch creamier...not as crumbly, yet very much grateable. My wife liked it more than PR. For me, PR won, as I like its intense nutty flavor and the crunch of tyrosine crystals. I also prefer the crumbly texture of aged PR.

Fair! If you like the tyrosine crunch, the 72 month PR is ahead. I like the creaminess. It’s a matter of taste. I’m glad you both enjoyed it.

My gosh!...That's just awesome!

I never see anything like that around me.
My wife found some fig jam...first ingredient was fructose corn syrup.
I told her I appreciate it but I will not be eating that, which she understood.
She usually looks for that kind of stuff, but was too excited I think. lol

A typical grocery store fig jam these days:
Fructose corn syrup
Water
Pectin
Guar gum
Xantham gum
Natural fig flavouring
Figs
:)

There’s no shortage of Italians in Toronto, but that area has a pretty heavy population. It’s a great area to go fig-spotting. Driving into the residential streets you can’t see the fig trees behind the fences… the trick is to look for rudimentary trellis’ in backyards because they’re taller. The old peasani put them up for their grape vines. And where there are grape vines…… there’s a good chance a fig is back there…. That’s the indicator to peek over the fence to confirm the location is fig-positive.

That would be cool, to live around plenty of others that are into the same hobby.
Just not too close....lol
I like being secluded.

It's really not uncommon for me to peek over the fence, only to have someone there tending to my garden. When they look at me (with that look) wondering what I'm doing, I just say, "I just want see the fig tree". (or if no fig then the vines) In every case they at least have given me a big smile.... on occasion I've been invited in for some garden-talk. :)
