Kellog’s vs Coast of Maine

I’ve been using Coast of Maine Bar Harbor blend mix for my container trees. It’s available at Ace hardware same price as last year $19.99 for 2cu ft, when I checked it this morning but I also seen a Kellogg brand also 2cu. ft. For only $10.99. What’s your opinion? Are they both good?

I've used Kellogg in the past and amend it with compost and perlite. I use it primarily for my raised veggies, but considering it for figs with the proper amendments.

Kellogg is ok for me, not as great as the better brands. I only use it for my raised bed and mix with compost and perlites, and it worked well. I used Foxfarm for my potted figs, but will try Coast of Maine this year.

I used to use Espoma exclusively - it was exceptionally good soil. However, about a year and a half ago, the composition of it has changed. Lots of sticks and branches, and several bags bought from different suppliers were infested with gnats.

That's when i read your post about the Coast of Maine 🙂 - I really do like it very much, and so do my trees. The only soil I like better is Happy Frog varieties. But those cost much more now.

Kellogg I purchased a few years ago and never again. It was mostly sticks and unbroken down wood. It was cheap… that’s about all I can say about it .

Now I’m worried. Should I mix up some gnatrol and pour it into the mix just in case?

Im also mindful that I tried it last 1.5 years ago. I hope im wrong and they have recovered. Espona has certainly been a good, reputable brand for a long time.

I would keep gnatrol on the ready, but take a good look at it first. I hope Im wrong and they're back to being great now. ( I just like your Coast of Maine so much, that I never had the need to go back and check).

Also, there are two different sizes of the bag. The 2 cu ft one, i have never seen it lowered than 19.99.
