I worked in Cincy for a number of years. Skyline is definitely an acquired taste.Well I live in Oregon now but I was born in Cinci. Skyline chili forever!![]()
A handful on your original list will most likely need a headstart / greenhouse. To either wake them up early or keep them out longer past frost to ripen. Just a heads upHmm…I never thought about growing a variety just for its breba, but it makes total sense in our zone.
To answer your question, I don’t have a lot of space and will be growing 98% in pots, and what I really want are the flavor standouts - those really stupendous tasting figs, which hopefully also do well in my humid 7a/6b PA area and can ripen here without a greenhouse.
Great minds think alike, since I think my new fig friend might be gifting me HDA, NdE, and WM #1 cuttings (fingers crossed).
I haven’t heard of UNK Schoenck before. That’s cool that it’s from Amish/Mennonite country, which isn’t too far from me (and is AWESOME to do a plant crawl through the Amish/Mennonite nurseries in the spring!! It’s my version of a pub crawl, but WAYYYY more fun!!)
Any and all suggestions are much appreciated. I haven’t tasted that many, so I rely on what I read from others’ posts. So please do share what you find to be the standouts for flavor!
That is an awesome suggestion for last year’s OTBP’s catalog - please and thank you.![]()
Thanks for the heads up. I’m hoping that my living room (which is a sunroom) is enough to wake them up, since I think it’s the warmth that starts the initial waking, not the sunlight, until they have leaves?A handful on your original list will most likely need a headstart / greenhouse. To either wake them up early or keep them out longer past frost to ripen. Just a heads upI’m in 7a NJ and I put about half my pots in greenhouse for a headstart otherwise I wouldn’t be able to ripen before frost
I would wait and get the cuttings from the forum giveaway. I got some really good ones last year. I'm sorry to hear you had a stroke. You look young in your avatar pic. It's rare for someone so young to have a stroke. While your cuttings are growing next spring, you could shop online for rooted cuttings from reputable fig growers. I have bought some from Trees of Joy, Coastal Fig Company, Kremp Florist, and also I got one from Figbid.Hi,
I’m new to figs (3 months) and am trying to source cuttings before cutting trading time arrives and people’s dormant cuttings sell out fast.
I’m happy to either buy them or trade.
I am really hoping someone will consider selling or trading with me since I can’t do time sensitive/higher pressure things like Harvey’s sale, since I had a stroke.
Here is my WL:

My husband is the same. Since I prefer to get living plants versus cut flowers he bought me my first fig tree (Brown Turkey) 4 years ago not knowing I would become a fig addict. His eyes have widened a couple of times watching me struggling to root cuttings but has always been encouraging. Now he is the first one to go check for a ripened fig. Last month, he drove me a couple of hours away to my first fig tasting event and came home with a list he wants and talking about redoing the yard to grow more! He definitely knows how to win my heart…For some it is not that complicated. My wife looks over my shoulder from time to time. While on here. Sometimes she says "That one looks good. Do we have if?" If I say no. She says "why not". I believe she is very supportive. But maybe she wants me to spend more time out in the yard.![]()

I'm 53 and a few years ago I had 5 heart attacks in one day. I have 3 stents now.Yes, am definitely waiting on the very generous forum giveaway.
Just thinking ahead and trying to find sources for when the time comes. I like to plan ahead, especially in a totally new space like figs where I don’t know much.
I really like Coastal Fig because his prices are very affordable, but he rarely answers messages which is challenging and doesn’t list his varieties online.
I’m 55, so probably not young by anyone’s def anymore, lol. Yeah, my heart labs have always been good, so the stroke was a total surprise, but I didn’t know I had a small hole in my heart, which is what caused it. Yup, unexpected divroce after 32 years, stroke, and 2 heart surgeries, it’s been a whopper of a time recently, but now I’m paid up and recovering and have discovered figs!![]()
I’ll pm you for an I-258 air layer. Thanks, I totally didn’t think of the possibility of importing pests/issues. Also didn’t know Kremp is near me, although for economics, I’m probably going to have to stick to cuttings for now.
Except for an I258, that is a real bugger to root and my fig pop is failing/failed, so I’m going to have to (and want to since I hear slouch great things about it) buy that one as a tree.
If anyone local (nj/pa) has an I258, that they don’t want to store for the winter, please lmk!
Omgosh, 5 in one day is insane. So glad you’re still here with us!I'm 53 and a few years ago I had 5 heart attacks in one day. I have 3 stents now.
The Lord has protected me my entire life. If you only know what I've been through.Omgosh, 5 in one day is insane. So glad you’re still here with us!
Hey it’s Dave. I signed up for an account on here after you told me to check out the site. I have white Madeira #1 in my figpop incubator from when we got cuttings from that dude last month I picked up when I was on vacation. If I have more then 1 that is successful we can trade rooted cuttings. He wouldn’t cut me more then 2 of theHi,

La magdaleine is equal to Campaniere in my eyes especially for beginner growers. Don’t worry about getting both because from my experience they are almost identical and in the book of the finder they look the same also.Hey it’s Dave. La Magdeleine, so if you have success with more then 1 we could do a swaparoo.
I think we all feel guilty on that one lol, buyers remorse is real especially when you buy all the mt etnas for “its different than the others”![]()
