I had a tree cut down, and I have a question

Ok so we had a maple tree die, and two of the bigger limbs fell a few days ago, thankfully in the other direction and missing my greenhouse.
We had tree cutters out today and he cut it back, saying it looked like some bug destroyed the tree.

So he left me a nice stump, and after I talked all the big guys into helping me move a big peach tree that had rooted through it's pot into the ground, I decided I would like to sit said tree on the stump. For one, to keep it from rooting into the ground again so we can plant it when we move.

I asked him what he thought, would the bugs , if they are in the trunk, infect my peach tree ? And he said he would treat the trunk with an insecticide first before I sat my pot on it.

I don't like chemicals in the garden..... I need opinions on this.

I would probably treat the stump and then put a solid plastic cover or something over it before sitting the pot on it, that would also guarantee to keep chemicals away from potted tree. I like the burn the stump idea better if that’s an option though.

It's not an option. Does it look like a bug or a fungal disease ?
 
My ash tree died from ash tree borers and we had it cut down a couple months ago. The kind of bugs it had don't bother anything else. Only ash trees. I don't know if that's the same for you but maybe they would only bother that particular tree
 
I would say bugs. Have you dug around in the holes to see if anything is in them. May possibly identify them if so and find out if they are variety specific pest or not.
 
This looks like carpenter ants which usually are only in decaying wood. Looks like the right side of the tree was dead so I assumed some carpenter ants moved in. You shouldn’t have issues with placing a potted tree on top of it.

I was thinking possibly ants too. We had some in a tree but I think I killed them all before we had the tree cut and stump ground down. I never got to examine that tree good, the guys doing the work were on it. Hard workers!
