I finally tried rooting in DE

I had the same experience as @TorontoJoe in terms of too much dust when I tried rooting in Optisorb. I spent over two hours rinsing outside (didn’t want this stuff clogging my sinks). It seemed like 1/3 of the product washed away. I was concerned about sifting it while dry because the dust isn’t good for you. I wondered if my bag was extra dusty because I bought online and may have been tossed around a lot in transit.

My end results weren’t as good as the bagged treepot so I didn’t repeat the experiment.

It appears there's some inconsistency in the product, and we got some duds

This is exactly what I have. So weird
And yes they are wet in my photo. Moist. They look like beautiful tiny little rocks when moist. Honestly I have a feeling this method will be really successful. I am the worst rooter on this forum. This product gives me both aeration and humidity all in one, and no fungus gnats so far. I don't see how it will not be successful. I even water once every day and the shirt underneath wicks all the excess water away. They are in small gas station cups and taco bell cups. I wouldn't use a super large container because I'm afraid of shearing the roots. I reduced all my cuttings to 3 nodes where possible.

Right. I have too many fines in there. I need to redo them tomorrow in Promix HP

Is there a reason to use DE other than trying to avoid fungus gnats?

I haven't used DE but it seems to have the same downfalls as using sand to root cuttings in.

@TorontoJoe Have you ever tried rooting figs using your lettuce's hydroponic setup?

Fungus gnats never been a real problem. I wanted to see if I could really not overwater.... apparently impossible with DE

I've never rooted in any water.... until recently. I have a Letizzia growing in a south window. It had a shoot that I clipped green and stuck in water last week.

The lettuce system is just for lettuce now. I did micro tomatoes a few times but I don't want to mess with a system that produces steady food now.

Does yours have the same item number?
The bags can look the same but have different numbers.
Mine has very little powder. I did not rinse mine when I tried it for cutting's and
it did not look like yours.

I don’t think there was more than one available. It’s just sold as spill absorbent. What number are you referring to?

I have been thinking about trying it myself. Now that I've read this post I may keep on thinking about it for a while longer. Maybe even another year. I did see some cuttings done in d e. They did not look like what you're showing me in these posted pictures. Might be a different brand.

This stuff came up heavy and sludgy even with sifting and several rinses. I’m going to see if I can find another brand for the next batch of cuttings that I do
