Huge rootball—1st leaf cutting

I judge it by the size of pot I'm going up to.
If there is a good bit of extra space I do the cuts to stop circling.
If not so much space I will actually cut the root ball down in size.

Beautiful tree, you have a green thumb for sure. :)

It wouldn't be a bad idea to make some cuts on those roots so they can expand in its new home. You might want to trim that sucker off when the tree goes dormant and make another tree.

Thanks Joe. I did keep a lot of sucker/didnt do any air layers so I could have more cuttings.

This Portuguese Purple Unk set a sucker that is now a better main trunk than the originals. Do you think I could just cut the root ball to the right of the main irrigation line and get two trees?

Agree with the others on Cherry Pie - great looking tree and to slice up the rootball.

You should be fine cutting up the rootball on the Portuguese Purple where you mention. If that’s an 8-gallon pot, the sucker will have ~2.5 gallons of roots and soil and the original trunk will have the remaining volume.

@9ah-figlet. That is no lie it's a huge cherry pie. Looks like some of you East Coasters are growing monsters this year. That cherry pie variety eclipses anything I've grown on my first year trees. Congratulations on having such a successful year.
