Frankenfig

I've long wanted to create a frankenfig. Last year I tried grafting a few varieties onto my Olympian, using small branches. I was 0-4.

I have a sizable Chicago Hardy tree and didn't like its branching structure, so cut it back to a 24" high stump and decided to try my hand at bud grafting and make a frankenfig. I used the T-bud grafting method and it worked great, 3-for-3! Although I'd probably chip bud graft next time; it seems even easier. Here's a few pics; excuse the bird droppings lol.

Bass' Favorite to right. Black Tuscan lower left.

Lower center is a little Bordissot Negra Rimada.

And a little Chicago Hardy branch at the base. I think I'll let it go. Until the grafts got established, I didn't allow any CH branches to grow on the tree.

Overall, it was super easy, especially since I had zero experience bud grafting! 😁

Thank you! It all honesty the entire process from start to finish took about 30 min. That includes taking little bud slices off my own trees and then placing them on the CH tree and wrapping with tape.

I didn't see much, if any, activity for the first 4 weeks. Then it's like, oh, I think I see a little swelling of a bud. Once that cambium layer takes hold, they really took off!

Next year I might try putting on a few more. I think it might be too hot here now to try. Not sure.

I never tried grafting because of my zone area it gets cold enough that I would be disappointed if a very cold winter like the one we just had and they suffered dieback and lose the grafts I worked hard to achieve.
