I VOTE FOR A FIG GRAFTING CATAGORY : A good idea !!! but will vote with words ,not cheap but have way more words than money ! AND well placed words have a market of there own ,at times more valuble than gold and more wieghty . ANY way number one line in this would be to send all the curious to JSacadura's how to videos !!! THAT SHOULD DO 99% OF THE QUESTIONS ,THE OTHER 1% WOULD BE LOCAL TIMING ,PERSONAL RESULTS AND TRICKS ,ETC.

If a separate category is created for fig grafting. Since many of us graft other plants as well. Would it make sense to have a general grafting category?
I agree a grafting specific category either way makes sense.

THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT PLANTS/TREES THAT CAN BE GRAFTED that also have aspects unique to them as a example selecting sions for avocados is more involved than figs as they never go dormant ,etc, etc i would just stick to figs here a lot can be used elswere but shure figs alone will make for plenty of fanatic information to learn .

Yes @ local timing. Recently I reposted a thread from growingfruit that shows optimal callous temps for fruit grafts, which someone posted.. I'm not sure if it listed figs but it shows the range for temps where graft callousing is optimized increasing the chances of success.

A few climates like mine have smaller windows noted by shorter growing spurts too and summer dormancy wheras most climates have a growing season uninterrupted which is similar but a larger range then the grafting windows..

Figs are so different from other wood that I think there are more variables... maybe at least for the rootstock but also I think rooting works better for some at the lower end of optimum ranges and some maybe like it a little warmer before the hormones move and roots pop out...

but I have yet to succeed with fig grafts and have only tried too late in the fall, thinking I could bring plants in and keep the cycle moving but if they are exposed to cool sleepy weather and start to go dormant I don't think the grafts will work either .. so maybe also relatable to having the runway and the plant juices moving for a while

Hmmm. I was actually thinking of rolling the 'frequently searched topics" into the main fig forum. Fundamentally I have no issue with this and like the idea..... But if you go to the 'frequently searched topics" area you'll immediately notice a few things. 1) There are very few posts there. Everyone seems to go to the main fig forum even if there's a section dedicated to it elsewhere.... and the reason I think everyone does this is 2) Everyone who comes here goes straight to the main fig forum or Gardening Talk if it's not about figs.

We have some of the best search functionality that I've used anywhere. Something that in the past was a real frustration for me. So no problem finding stuff about grafting....

BUT... If a lot of people want it... it's definitely something that's not difficult to do... Just when I put it in.... people need to post there ;)

YEA DO NOT LOOK AT ME ,I JUST ANSWER QUESTIONS ,WHEN I THINK I HAVE A USEFULL ANSWER WHERE EVER I FIND THEM AND AS A COMPUTER ILLITERATE THAT SO FAR IS UNDER FIG TALK ,FIGURE A GRAFTING SECTION IS MOSTLY FOR NEWBES or other first time grafters ? would cheak it out every now and then but tend to give so calif centrick addvise on grafting .

GRAFT IN THE EARLY SPRING JUST BEFORE BUDS START TO BREAK AND STONE FRUIT START HAVING FLOWERS ,IN YOUR AREA . GRAFTS WORK BETTER THEN THAN ANY OTHER TIME OF YEAR NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE . IN MY OPINION ?

How to graft with the material in each season is helpful too. So you are able to graft all year if you like. Different techniques work at different times.

On my last attempt of a bark grafts I totally failed because it was way too late. The bark wasn't slipping at all. I should have known when I could barely peel it up without breaking it.

Personally, I'm very much looking forward to you more experienced grafters posting images of your techniques in the coming months.

@Fig Gazer - How are things coming with the camera search? I'll personally help you through how to post pictures. :)

I just thought being so late in the season the tree was preparing for dormancy and would take some time to get the fluids flowing again...

Depends on how late.
If you just want the graft to callous and take off next year it can be pretty late but if you want growth in the current year it has to be with some season left.
Late summer y budding is only to heal the bud not to get any growth.

Meant t budding
UNLIKE a commercial grower i have the option of only grafting during"the prime time" for my skill leaval and climate . LIKE your trick to get bark to slip by watering . gone to cleft grafting over bark grafts ,get twice the cambrium contact with my clefts vs my bark grafts and stronger from the git go .

It's tricky in some areas it really has alot to do with callous temps but surely it can vary by variety... we get above 80 very quickly here in Dallas and in most yearw years and so maybe that's the right call here with peaches .. apples and pears ive had very high rates, and i wait until the trees are obviously waking.. plums also but the peaches i only had high strike with one variety .. maybe i did a little earlier the year it worked but I think it was as the buds were popping or shortly after ... covering with envelopes or foil can make the difference in some cases but in places eith steady temps it's much easier

I'll be grafting cosme manyo soon as far as figs goes not sure when is optimal for figs.

Where I might choose a bark graft over a cleft graft is a large diameter trunk that’s being worked over. You could do a side cleft graft in that instance, but a bark graft means less to heal over.

My first attempt at grafting was a success. Made three lousy grafts a few weeks ago, completely forgot about them, and now I see this:)
