Dr. Gowaty Breba

Yes, you are correct. It's one of my favorites, and it is an excellent Atreano type. It grows really well here. The eye is small, and it resists splitting. I prune pretty hard. So I've never ripened a breba, but the main crop is big and 'fruity.' The fig was brought to Alabama from Israel prior to 1960 by Dr. Gowaty. He took a trip to Israel to visit family and friends in his hometown. He subsequently brought back cuttings from the tree that was on his family's property, which I believe is a kabutz. [Interesting side note, Mr Figs, who introduced Israeli Black to the hobby, says that it also originates from the same family farm in Israel. It is also quite split-resistant as well.]

I've got a 3 year old tree and so far it's hanging on to a few breba. Hoping they'll stay!

That is interesting, thanks. Do you know the history of Schar Israel? I have a rooted cutting and am just curious about it.
