I always cut them in half to check for spoilage, mold and any other critters. Also, cut out surface mold, endosepsis. I don't recall any maggots here. I guess bagging most of the figs early help.

I do like biting into a cut fig better than a whole one usually. It is a lot eastern yo tell if there is spoilage too. Although, if I am working outside, I will just bite into them whole sometimes and spit it out if it has soured. A few worms never hurt anyone

Those worms are proteins.
