Do you open your fig?

That's just extra flavor! I joked about extra protein in late summer raspberries with my kids. My daughter never knew what I meant until one day she found an SWD larva. I explained that was the protein. She was disgusted and took the rest of the season off. Fortunately her little brother had no such qualms and she decided that she wasn't going to let him eat all the berries this year. I bag the figs so don't get too many bonuses these days.

BETWEEN BFF ,fig wasp born fungus, mold and other fermentation i always cut figs in half as a minimum ! AND ALWAYS TASTE HALF OF EVERY FIG I OFFER TO OTHERS BEFORE I HAND IT TO THEM TO EAT !!!!! NO BETTER WAY TO TURN SOMEONE OFF OF FIGS THAN HAVING THEM EAT A SPIOLED FIG !!!! YOU BETTER CUT OPEN DRIED FIGS FROM TURKEY and look for mold and large dried worms . I clasfiy a lot of ripe figs as "SPITERS" and a lot of dried figs fall in that catigory !NOW A NICE JUICEY HIPO WOULD BE A FIGGY BOUNUS !

Never thought of doing it with dried figs...

I always open my figs; most of my figs were open because I was getting one or two figs from the same variety at a time, and I was sharing with my wife and two kids, so I had to cut them in 4’s. After a while, I just got so used to cutting them that, when I recently had a few more figs, I just continued to open them and felt just right doing it that way.

I mainly cut my figs in half to share with my household otherwise I may not leave any for anyone else to try. I'm not against eating insects lol because I have harvested cicada insects and cooked them in the past during but I draw the line when the fig has mold or rot. I'm open to trying different types of safe food ;)

I try to only acquire varieties which have a tight eye. This past growing season for the most part, I have been taking them to the house for inspection to take notes, share new varieties with my better half, and to be sure there are no surprises inside like mold or being sour. There have been times I just cannot wait to take fruit up to the house due to anticipation and just pure greediness. Many times after doing so, I have regrets because I do not always remember the observations of the fruit picked. Now I carry paper and pen with me while out in the fig area.
