Discussing tulips and convincing everyone to eat their Hostas.

Woman, I’m not going to eat my hostas! I do enough to fend off the deer from eating them!

Now why don’t things like dandelions or thistle taste good? Oh, the weed Gods are a laughing!
i like dandelion too lol. i dont eat thistle though. but ive heard theyre edible. i mean i eat artichoke and cardoon... I enjoy the greens htough just cooked simply like spinach. but they are bitter

Weird that dandelion was brought here as a food crop... is so healthy.. and now pretty much nobody even recognizes it as edible... and just gets sprayed with herbicide.

Back in the 70's and 80's my family and their friends would go out into fields and spend the day collecting bushels of free greens.

Power of pesticide companies...they tell the world its a weed and needs to be treated as such and eventually it is so.
We don't even have any that grow here....too bad.

I didn't know Hostas is edible. That is cool!!

I grow lilies for the bulbs. They are good in stirfry or soup.

I keep a few dandelions for their leaves. Thistle can be aggressive and thorny so I tend to pull those out when they are still little.
Which lilies do you grow? Im growing wood lily this year but the bulbs are tiny.

Id like to eat ditch lilies (not true lilies but edible) since theyre often everywhere and are invasive here

I think these are asiastic lilies. I got them in a variety pack. Some of them are bigger than a garlic bulb or small onion. Small ones are like garlic bulb. I also tried to grow them using flaps of the bulb instead of the whole thing. They are pretty resilient even in hot weather here. I know they are cold hardy because I grew them in the North for many years.

I read the pretty flower ones are not as good in taste compare to the plain ones. I don't think I have a pretty flower one even though the pack label shows all the pretty flowers.

Some of the lilies are not true lilies so they may not be edible.

When I was little I spent summers with my grandparents in Arkansas way out in the country. From end of May till end of August. We'd be driving along going to town and my grandma would stop suddenly pull over in the ditch and gather weeds for dinner... It was actually " rape" which I think is in the brassica family

yes, Rape/rapseed. actually what they make canola oil out of! AKA rapeseed oil (depending on labeling)

Well it was good as greens and it was free... So for country folk that was great and probably chock full of healthy vitamins. I grew up loving all kinds of greens. Poor farmers at least ate healthy
its a great one. modern day garlic mustard is everywhere here and i eat a lot of it as fresh (when younger) and cooked greens.

There is a genetically modified version of rapeseed that is commonly grown in Canada for its tolerance to herbicide. Europe, probably still have the original version.

The rapini I buy here is imported from California. It's the only one I know of here that's true to the flavour of what's grown in Calabria. I've never been able to grow it well here.
