Does anyone know who runs the Pennsylvania Fig Fest? I’d like to connect with them about some prize sponsorship
Maybe 1 out 15-20. The number of new figs that were really good last year (monaco, vince 3, Mario48, nero di rocca) were far outweighed by varieties that "need another year"for me … once having those tried and true production figs established, trying new varieties is all the fun. I know full well that I might not like some… but it’s fun experimenting and seeing what will do well for me. And its a special treat when a new one is so good and grows so well that it makes it into the regular rotation…
What would you say that is for you? 1 out of 10? 20? 50?
You should check out the DMV figfest this year so you can compare the two. As a Pennsylvanian with about equal distances to both, I think if I could only go to one it would be the DMV figfest. Although this year they are on different days so maybe you don't have to choose. The date has been set for the next Pennsylvania Fig Festival. Hope you can join in - it was so good last year, plus then we can meet in person!
It will be held again at the Althouse Arboretum (1794 Gilbertsville Rd, Pottstown, PA 19464).

No clue yet. I'm just getting started. Ideally I'd like to get most in ground around our house, my mothers house and the fields I'm working on clearing. If they don't survive in ground ideally only a few will need the fig shuffle.for me … once having those tried and true production figs established, trying new varieties is all the fun. Yea, was new to me lol. Could see where they dug with a shovel. Bad part is I would’ve gave them melons later on when it produced or even one of my three plants if they’d have knocked on the door. That is wild. When I first read it, I thought they just stole a watermelon but a plant, that is crazy.
Cant imagine a fruiting melon plant transplanted that wellYea, was new to me lol. Could see where they dug with a shovel. Bad part is I would’ve gave them melons later on when it produced or even one of my three plants if they’d have knocked on the door.
probably not, but was just the principle for me. You want seeds, a plant or cuttings of anything of mine I’ll happily share. All someone has to do is ask y’kno.Cant imagine a fruiting melon plant transplanted that well
Yea I totally agree. I'm happy to give away fig trees, but Ill usually meet someone at some public place over having people I've never met come to my house.probably not, but was just the principle for me. I can understand that. Them coming to my door wouldn’t bother me, unless it was repeatedly unannounced. Rather have somebody knock than all the methheads thinking they are sneaky lol.Yea I totally agree. @Figsee I could always airlayer the top off and give it another chance in a year or twoI really like Crozes and think it has great cherry/berry flavor. My tree will be going in ground this spring. However you are not the first person who has told me that they were culling it.
I have two, one in the greenhouse and one in a pot that goes outside. They are very similar in vigor compared to some other figs that I have in the greenhouse and out (aunan, and angelito are much more vigorous in the greenhouse) I also don't have the other mt etna's to compare against crozes.@Figsee I could always airlayer the top off and give it another chance in a year or two. Especially if I keep hearing good things about it.
But for young trees most of the top tier Mt Etnas seemed very similar to me. Curious also if you are growing your Crozes outdoors like me or in your awesome greenhouse ?
Alot of it is personal preferences and growing environment. Thats why everyone has a different list of favorite figs. I like to go by the prices on figbid for what is the best tasting figI have two, one in the greenhouse and one in a pot that goes outside. You may want to check the selling policy at the PA Figfest, I thought I saw this past Fall that they were limiting vendor spaces. I haven't been there yet, just thought it could help with your planning.I think the DMV fig festival maybe the same driving distance as the PA one for me. I have family and friends living in Pottstown though, so I might go there when it's time for cull.
It seems like they’ve had the same vendors selling trees two years in a row so I assume you’re right. You may want to check the selling policy at the PA Figfest, I thought I saw this past Fall that they were limiting vendor spaces. Rubado got one of my limited in-ground spots. It ripens great figs for me consistently. It’s not particularly late for me either. I have three tiers of figs: 1. Permanent in-ground 2. Grafting spot on an in-ground tree 3. Trialing in potsAs I get ready for the 2026 fig season, it’s time to cull some underperforming or duplicate trees. I was able to find homes for the following trees locally:
Cdd Noir
Rubado
Jolly Rancher
Corazan de Bahia
Malta Black
Deanna
Blava Flor
Raspberry Tart
Honey Plum
Hoping to downsize another 20 or so to make room for some new trees. What’s everyone culling this spring?
Yea it looks like your three zones warmer then me so I can see it performing well. It splits easily for me so it makes the most beautiful little shop of horror figsRubado got one of my limited in-ground spots. It ripens great figs for me consistently.
