People are crazy. When i want to get rid of things I do a curb alert for them on my local gardening and buy nothing. Never had an issue with someone grabbing it. Did have an issue where one brilliant soul dug up my red bud whip that was planted on the street because they thought for some reason that was the blackberries I was giving away
I don't think any local people would take my unwanted fig trees either. It's not easy to grow figs in northeast area. I thought about giving them away for just shipping cost, then someone said you need nursery license to do so. Compost pile may be the easiest solution.Compost pile starting to sound better?
There is no one in your area at all. You're in central PA and there are PA growers in this forum.I don't think any local people would take my unwanted fig trees either. I would be shocked if you said free fig tree and someone didnt pick it up.There is no one in your area at all. You're in central PA and there are PA growers in this forum.
I know there are some PA fig growers, but not many, especially where I live. I'll try to offer the tree for free local pick up first, but I doubt I can find anyone. I'm still quite new to fig with my oldest trees are just at their 2nd year, so my cull wouldn't start until next year. There is no one in your area at all. A few years ago, a GA grower's wife advertised trees for sale on fb. Its was about a 2.5 hour from point A to B and the prices were reasonable back then. I got Smith, Adriatic JH, Ciliegia Dolce, CDD Cuitat, Caralheto Preto and an unk for $60 total. If you give away for free, "they will come."I would be shocked if you said free fig tree and someone didnt pick it up.
I hope you are right. I'll certainly try! I really want to find the unwanted ones a good home.A few years ago, a GA grower's wife advertised trees for sale on fb. Yea same boat, and my city is extremely large and maybe 2 or 3 fig growers. Its crazy. Our microclimate is brutal and i just dont think people know you can grow figs here with just a little extra care. Central pa is not the place for figs.I hope you are right. I'll certainly try! i respect all that and agree would be better to make a top 100 for specific area/situationI'm in the Northeast corner of Maryland 30 mins north of Baltimore, 45 minutes south of Philly, So Mid Atlantic or Northeast depends on how a person draws the line.
I would hesitate to draw up a public "don't " grow list,
Culling is subjective and what works for one grower wont for another even in the same area
I'd hate to discourage someone from trying something that interests them.
Even the ones I'm culling I'm not really doing my due diligence. Im 100% potted so I should give them a chance inground but thats not an option on this property, and I should change up my soil medium, watering routine, mineral applications. I have so many individual trees that I have to find ones that fit into the systems I have setup or they aren't worth growing for me.
I totally respect the OP and I don't want to throw shade on his thread I just wanted to answer your question.
It may be more constructive to make up a 'Top 10", "top25, are "top 100" list of go-to varieties for an area. And any individual variety within or outside of that could be discussed for its merits. I think thats the kind of discussion that can build positive knowledge.
More like stupid. They clearly realized the error of their ways cause they tossed it back on my lawn. Too bad he died lol. Luckily its an easy to grow from seed plant so I just grabbed some pods from the parkPeople are crazy.
No way, there are a handful of us PA fig folks here!I know there are some PA fig growers, but not many, especially where I live. I'm close to State College. Far away from large cities. You may have more fig lovers near Philly, but it's hard to find someone wants fig trees here.No way, there are a handful of us PA fig folks here!
I forget, what town are you in?
