Know I'm late to this party but I have soil with rocks and clay.... I think @ ktrain used a pick ax... I have no upper body strength and a weak left side ... I have spent every day about a half hour to 45 min a day with a water hose. I started the hole by blasting water in the same place till it started a hole. Then alternating water and digging the wet sludge out ... After a week I finally had a hole a three foot wide and two foot deep. Everytime I hit a rock I couldn't shovel out I used water to blast it out. I thought it was pretty ingenious myself.
I have taken the clay removed half the rocks added some sand, some good soil and mixed it all back up I hope it will work... It worked for my alma. Mixing half the rocks, all the clay with sand and goot soil. They way I figure it, it gives the roots some time to spread through less good soil than was in their root ball before being required to dig into the native soil. I planted my Italian 258 in that hole today! Too dark for a picture but I planted on my lunch break
