Celeste Fruit

This is a pic of some of my Celeste fruit and they are starting to get this grey color. My question is should I reduce the amount of water that I give the tree as the fruit is ripening? I have heard that if the tree gets a lot of water, then the fruit won't be as sweet. I have been giving my trees a lot of water. I have also heard that if Celeste doesn't get regular watering that it may drop it's fruit. The tree is 3 years old and it also has tiny figlets just beginning to form.

To get the best tasting fruits, you need to control the water in-takes. In USA, we get a lot of rainfall in spring and the fall. Soil is generally heavy and rich in nutrients. This promotes too much vegetative growth and our figs may taste watery due to too much water in the fall. The problem is actually in the fall. We get hot summers in general.

Do not worry about figlets dropping. Trees know how many figs they can produce with the amount of roots they have. Since you are in Texas, you get the hot summers to deal with. You may have to keep enough water just to make trees happy. So you need to balance that. I'd mulch the trees if the summer is so extreme.

Well, you beat me to it. My smith tree has some that are doing just that. Wasn’t real sure what was going on. Figured I’d let them ride out their journey, either to my belly, or to the ground.

A lot of water in a short period of time will definitely wash out the flavour in a fig. If a fig is on the cusp and heavy rain is forecast I may pick a day early.... that or cover/move the tree if that's an option.

As for the grey, it's a bit difficult to tell. Possibly something fungal if it's been super wet without enough air flow

I water water water until the figs are ripening. It is at that point when I will still water if I need to, but I will water much less. This is also going off of that my plants are all potted and my potting mix and containers have excellent drainage.
