BucksCountyFigs

Well-known member
Brian Melton (profig) just posted a truck full of fig trees he bought from a great nursery in Fresno.

I called the nursery, and they normally don’t ship but they said that they would be willing to do a trial shipment to me, so I thought I’d put it it there for anyone who would be interested and could pick up from my house in Perkasie, PA 18944.

Figs are $25 + shipping.

The figs are 3-4’ tall, in a ?5” pot, and would be shipped cut down (approx 18” long) + you get the rest of it as a cutting.

And even more exciting is that there is a striped fig that I haven’t heard of before called Purple Tiger (is a common fig). Here is Brian’s video on it:

There are only 11 left of Purple Tiger.

If you want to add to my order, pls lmk by Sunday 9p EST.

Just Brian’s videos:

And the grower sent me this video, which I suggested he out the cuttings in a ziploc, which he said he would do. Oops, I can’t figure out how to attach a video here, is it possible?

Not sure you can - have to upload to YT or another video sharing site.

I’m just seeing potted plants. Is he selling cuttings too?

Just keep in mind that bff is present in California so be aware of the risk of purchasing trees…
True, but I saw some good research by RosyPosy who has researched this A LOT, and she said:

“The thing can only spread through contaminated fruit, and contaminated fruit that was over soil. Only that soil is a risk, and if it is washed cleanly away, that risk is gone. These things are big enough to see, they are not microscopic.

You need contaminated fruit, it needs to land in the pot, (which is almost impossible with a treepot,) and it needs to have happened within the last month or so to be overwintering in the pot. If the flies have left a given area by September or so, the chances of overwintering pupae in that area are low.

There are so many factors to consider. But ultimately it circles back to can you see pupae on a bare rooted tree, and the answer is yes. Even if you have bad eyesight, you should still be able to see brown particles of that size”

Plus, remember these are in TINY pots - I think they are 5” pots, so just rinse away the tiny bit of soil in a bag and toss or in a bucket and add bleach.

Honesty, I would strongly guess those pots are mainly roots and very little soil at this point.

So I think our risk is low and easily mitigated, but thank you for the reminder.
