I was first introduced to Buzzone Nero by the founder of the Southernfigsforum group (JD Puckett). Growing in the heat and humid conditions of the Louisiana Gulf coast, he claimed it to be one of his top 3 varieties. Now, JD could be a bit of a story teller, so I had to try it in my NJ 6B growing zone.
After growing this variety for 4 years in a 20 gallon pot, I can honestly say that it is a fantastic cultivar. It has similar size and shape of I-258, taste that is a cross of Bourjasotte Grise and I-258 (very sweet berry), vigorous growth, good production, and most importantly, has not split as it ripens its crop from early September through the end of the month.
Since it was a Southern “find”, I don’t know it’s winter hardiness if growing in ground in more northern states. My guess is that it would not do well in such environments (assume similar winter hardiness to Smith?).
If you get a chance, I recommend members trying this one if you live in zone 6B or higher.
