It doesn’t quite look like sunburn to me. It could be because of temperature or moisture fluctuation, but ultimately, improving calcium will help.

The hollowness is because it has dried out and died in spots.

Sunburn. White wash the trunks and it should stop happening.

Wow! Is there anything big growth above that damaged area? Or is it dead right through?

Yep, definitely sunburn! I had one that looked just like this last summer. If the other side is still healthy it will probably survive, but may never be as healthy or vigorous.
