Bark damage

Hi,

Pic to follow: i was sad to notice bark damage on my in ground black mission.

There are some cracks in the outer bark, its a redder colour like when the wood dies, and it feels spongey and hollow. I dont see any tunneling or cuts or bites from animals

How did this happen? I want to learn from this if possible so i can prevent it from haopening on other trees. Could it have been from sun burn ?

I also get splitting trunks on southwest side like Matt above. That intense end of day sun that quickly becomes a frigid night makes it go from too hot to too cold too quickly, and POP, it cracks. It's common

10a Phoenix so I’m thinking probably not cold. It would be my first guess if you were on the north. I would like to see a pic.

Just because you don’t see tunnelling doesn’t mean it’s not some sort of disease. Is it on the main trunk? If it’s not a critical part of the tree you may want to amputate.

A picture would definitely help though.

I noticed one of my 8 year old multigrafted trees on Italian everbearing completely split. I like it as a rootstock because it stays short and branches very well. I think it doesn't go dormant very well. I think it time to dig it up.

It is most likely sun damage from sun burn. Paint your trunks white. I know IV organics has a product. It should help that from happening again. It’s called white washing your trunks. They do it on allot of trees not just figs.

Its the main trunk and it feels pretty hollow and dead, thankfully i have shoots coming up so i coukd cut the tree down if needed
