Anyone in Houston?

I have to take my kid to Houston in a few weeks and I'm going to be bored out of my mind with nothing to do while she visits with friends. Any nurseries there with good fig stock or individual collectors who just want to blab about figs or sell me plants that are in Houston? I'm staying in Tomball but I'll have a car.

My sister in law is in Houston right now. She is Vietnamese born. My brother was at my place tonight for dinner…..talking about all the great food she’s been enjoying. Let me see if I can get some recommendations

I haven’t been there for a few years. For me when in Texas, I go for bbq. But apparently I’m missing out

I don’t live in the Houston area but there are a few great nurseries to check out if you can, Enchanted Gardens and Buchanan’s have a big variety and may have figs right now. There is this hidden nursery called Tran’s Nursery, they have 2 locations and this place feels like you’ve entered another world. They always have a few varieties of figs but they have a huge variety of exotic and rare fruiting trees and just soo many things to see. Plants N Plants is another hole in the wall nursery but has a lot of fruiting trees too and at great prices! If I were going into the city, I’d definitely do Trans Nursery, then Plantas N Plants first then I’m sure I’d be full with no room left to go anywhere else.

I remember now.... Enchanted Gardens nursery. Not sure how far it is from where you'll be
Enchanted Gardens is about 50 miles from Tomball. It's a great nursery and worth checking out, but the traffic could be horrendous depending on the time of day. The Arbor Gate is in Tomball and is a great place to shop, but might be a bit pricey, depending on your budget.

I'm in Humble, but used to live in "The Heights" (slightly west of downtown). I've purchased fig trees from Buchanan's (The Heights) and from Warren's Southern Gardens (Kingwood). I highly recommend both for garden veggies and herbs, but not necessarily fig trees. I have not visited Trans Nursery or Plantas N Plants, but they are on my list for a Springtime visit.

Most of my trees come from serious fig folks in the region like Rudypayraise. I think I've seen him post here and OF. There are a good number of folks in the Houston area or within about an hour drive who have a mindblowing number of healthy trees and cuttings. Maybe check out the Houston Fig Exchange and Texas Fig Growers Facebook pages for in person meet ups? Scott B., Todd H., Rick T., and a number of other folks are great to chat with and have some great trees and cuttings that they are putting out right now.

Thanks so much for all this info!

I’m from the Houston area. The rodeo is in town, so that would be fun to do with kids.
As others have mentioned, The Arbor Gate is a good place to get some unique varieties of plants. Enchanted Garden / Enchanted Forest are good, but a bit too far from Tomball.

@4evercurious did you end up going to Plantas?
My apologies for the delay in reporting back. I did finally get there by Friday afternoon. However, after the visit, I am solidly in the camps for Enchanted Garden, Tran Nursery, Arbor Gate, etc. The Plantas plants are pretty cheap, but don't look as healthy and well maintained as other nurseries.

If you are looking for healthy rooted cuttings in the Tomball area during your visit, there's someone from Figbid up there who I have purchased from previously. Very nice guy, passionate about figs. I believe his real name is Jason. He goes by Jkyris1 on Figbid.

I found a lady selling a mature in-ground Mission fig tree that wasn't in the best shape. When I went to dig it up, I noticed she lived pretty close to Enchanted Gardens and Enchanted Forest down in Richmond, Texas. I went to Enchanted Gardens and remembered why I do not shop there often.

Beautiful nursery with very healthy plants and trees! It's Spring Break so they were packed! The Mister is going to throttle me....picked up two Texas Blue Giants and a Flanders (all 3 gallon size), along with a couple of Brown Select satsumas, some veggie plants, and Texas native flowering plants. The fig trees were not as expensive as I remembered. However, those citrus were a wee bit of a stretch, probably because of the quarantine zone.

I tried messaging him through figbid but he didn't respond (maybe he didn't see it) - I love hearing about everyone's favorite fig trees but maybe he's weirded out by some rando showing up in his yard lol
