I hear you - sometimes simpler is just better.

I stuck some cuttings yesterday, just some prunings and a failed late season airlayer in one gallon containers. Two in one and five in two. Basic potting mix, no hormone, cut up milk jugs resting on pots and sitting next to the furnace. I’m hoping they take awhile to leaf out so I don’t have to hang lights.
 
It must be the Canadian Industrial Peat Complex.... Coir isn't very easy to find here... If you do it costs a fortune. I use ProMix HP.... which is peat based but has maybe 25% perlite so it's good and gritty. Like you say though.... stick with what works....

I have always used peat. Works very well for me. 50% peat/ 25% pine bark and 25% kellogg's raised bed is what most my trees are are in.
