The Many Faces of SoCal Sunset

I found this tree on Google Street Maps in December of 2021. I went to check it out in person and luckily there was a lady there who knew the history of the tree. She said it likely grew from a seed from a giant fig tree that was cut down and removed, approximately 30 feet from this tree. I was able to see the mother tree on Google Streets dating back to 2008 and removed by 2011. Between 2011 and 2015 is when SoCal Sunset was spotted growing on Google Street Maps. I suspect this tree is a Smyrna due to the amount of undeveloped figs that drop. I picked the last one of the season today.

It very good under the right conditions. It’s split resistant, that being said I had it on the same sprinkler system as my old lawn. It was overwatered everyday. The first year in ground growth reached about 12 ft.

You know I have not seen one fig tree here in Georgia while driving or walking around, I think people are hiding them from me!

I need to go on walk about to California so I can find some trees...call it Special K.  :D

I originally posted the picture with my dog around the time I found it which was in December 2021. I think it was a late season fig that hadn’t developed. A lot of people were interested in this fig back then. I finally got to see what it looks and tastes like this year. I’ll decrease the water next year and see what happens.

@"Figology"#21 . What a show stopping picture of your beautiful seedling fig. I am glad you decided to keep it 12 ft in 1 year is an aggressive grower. I cannot imagine what you been feeding it. Congratulations on coordinating with Google Earth, and a kindly neighbor to give us this wonderful backstory and scrumptious pictures of this fig.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been here in Virginia since October 2020 and never seen a fig tree anywhere. You would think with Brown Turkey and Celeste being popular in the South I would have seen one by now.

When I read the word, "sunset"...it sent me back to a picture I took a few years back in Pizzo, Calabria. Figs growing wild everywhere... and the sunset over the volcano Stromboli is something one never forgets.

Did I mention there are loads of great, wild figs here?

I've travelled much of south Italy... I'm thinking now as to what areas have the highest density of wild ficus carica growing... Two regions come to mind.... :)

I’m excited to see how this fig performs next year when I reduce its water. So far it’s highly split resistant and has a long production span. Here’s another one from today.
