Letting go

I was asked if I wanted to sell some of my 5 gallon figs at an upcoming event. I currently have 31 in 5 gal pots. Initially I thought, Great! I can recoup some of the cost. But after I got home and started looking at which ones to sell, I just couldn’t part with any! I’m still so new and haven’t tasted them - and what if I sell something and then regret it? I’m now officially a fig-hoarder….

Ruth, I feel your pain. I MUST reduce my collection of more than 160 varieties to a “more manageable” 50 varieties by the end of next year’s growing season. Winter storage is my limiting issue as trees grow bigger and bigger.

I’ve already given away more than 20 varieties, but have a long way to go. It only gets harder and harder to part with additional trees. I have so many one year trees that still need taste testing too. If I save a young tree, an established one must go.

I have a difficult time letting go.... even if the fig hasn't yet produced well.... I always want to give them a bit more time to prove themselves.... The only thing that ultimately forces me to get rid of a tree is the need to make space for something I want to try but don't have room for

I feel you on this! I really need to cut down my collection but have tons I haven’t tasted yet. It’s so hard! Definitely don’t get rid of any you are attached to or would really like to try. There’s always later to sell or giveaway if you like.

I too need to reduce the inventory. There are a couple of duplicates, and one or two unk. BUT I like them. Also 8 new varieties rooting. My wife asked "are you going to get more figs?". I think she is angling at an expanded border garden and knows I will prep another garden if I can get a little more space. I told her that I didn't think I would, then took delivery of 3 gorgeous cuttings.🙄 I may need to consider some multivariety grafted trees.

So be a good neighbor and just walk over with a bunch of cuttings one day. She’ll think even more highly of you and you keep all your trees.
I should, but I don't want to be over there 100 times answering questions lol
That's not a bad idea though....I may ask her if she is interested in rooting. :)

For me the hard part is, the ones I would part with, I don’t consider good enough to give away. And the ones good enough to give away, I want to keep 😂
I got a great deal on Petit Negra cuttings....a very productive fig btw, so I grew way too many so I had to give some away....so my advice is to grow extra...Lol

Well a mediocre fig is way better than no fig. And some of those lesser figs are less of a loss when/if the new owner isn't"t successful.

Shhee, hopefully someday. Currently, I’m lucky if I can get a single cutting for myself to survive my rooting efforts 😂.

It depends on the variety—I wouldn’t want someone I like to be stuck with my RGR 😄. Every fig has been bland and tastes watered down. TBH I think it would turn them off figs
