The berries have arrived 🍓🫐

@BruceB @RandyK ... I am with you guys, If I see something growing somewhere and looks interesting I want to try it.

If you don't have a way to identify, I was watching this guy years ago on YT and he said if you take a small bit of the juice and wipe it on your lip, if poison it will cause a sensation of discomfort of some type, letting you know you should not consume it.

I have yet to test this theory...may need to ask a Dr. lol

Yikes! Yeah, not trying anything unless I'm sure I know what it is...

I think using a couple of plant identification apps can help ID plants though. I used this last year to find out what a certain berry was that I was not familiar with...Wineberries. Found out it is a non-native, invasive berry plant, but definitely edible. And they are tasty!
 
My Wife and I were attending a Memorial Day celebration in a neighboring village, and were headed to the car. She stopped and looked up and exclaimed is that a cherry tree. It was a huge cherry tree. It was a huge, ripening,tart cherry tree completely covered in red cherries. Of course I plucked a few. Tart and delicious! A lady emerged from the alley across the street, and you guessed it. "Are you stealing my cherries?" "Why yes I am!" We all laughed and said take all you want. Yep I am an urban grazer!

Do you water them often? Mine are in ground going on year 3 and they’re still small plants (like 1.5 ft tall). Deer keep eating them—maybe that’s keeping them from doing much. I hardly ever water them though.

I water them just as often as my fig trees 👍🏽 it’s all about your soil though.

Is your soil acidic? Also I fertilize twice using berry-tone early & mid season :)

We got clay soil here and I haven’t done anything to make the soil acidic 🥲. I’ll try actually taking care of them this year and see how they do 🤔😂. Thanks

I have clay soil aswell, the thick kind that doesn’t drain at all haha. I don’t plant anything inground here unless it’s a mature tree.

All my berries are in containers or raised beds 👍🏽 I use peat moss and fine pine bark in the soil mix to make it slightly more acidic for those. And Berry-tone twice per season :)

Mr. chipmunk didn't do too much damages to my strawberry beds yesterday, so I had very good harvest yesterday. I thanked him when I saw him in my garden and he jumped right into my strawberry bed!

My chipmonks haven't been active yet, but they will be coming for sure, as they do every year. I usually cover my strawberries with an insect net right after they flower and set fruit. That helps keep a lot of pests away - birds, chipmunks, insects, and squirrels. My dogs too... if they see a ripe berry, they will go for it.
