I finally reached the end

Over the past number of years, and a lot of work, I have finally completed the fig orchard... with pushback from my wife every step 😉. But she loves it now lol.

I've culled a number of figs I didn't like and replaced them, shifted around a few. The blue columns are the potted figs; I have 8 figs in big pots, and 60 in ground.

I have no more room for more figs, I'm tapped out unfortunately. I've squeezed out every spot available. All my in-ground figs are planted 9 feet apart. But I like the results! Just wanted to share my hard work. I shall want no more! 😉

I know it's getting late. At some point I'd like to know your criteria for what earns a fig a spot in-ground. I'm just assuming you trial them in containers for some period to decide if they're worth it.

Actually the 8 in pots are there because I ran out of in-ground spots. I have culled 9 varieties over the past few years. Luckily digging here is really easy; it's all sand!

My wife and I have been looking for a chunk of sand to purchase somewhere in Florida.
Outside city limits of course.
So I have been reading a lot about growing in sandy soil.
Are you amending the soil with anything?
Worried about RKN?
Will gators eat your figs?

I typically mix in a bit of compost, not much, into the hole. That's about it. I fertilize once around mid Feb, right before they wake up. Luckily I don't have RKN. I've culled 9 trees over the past few years and have given each a through root inspection; no signs of RKN! So far zero figs lost to gators 😉

Okay cool, we're looking mostly in the north.
Where you can still get 5 or 10 acre without giving up your first born. Lol
Also fewer gators. 😆

There's surprisingly cheap land to be had. I keep telling my wife I'm going to buy a couple of acres so I can grow more figs. She thinks I'm kidding 😉

The further you get away from the beach, the cheaper the land gets. In the st Augustine area of n fl, places like Hastings and Palatka are rural and typically have inexpensive land. And you're still just 30 min from the beach.

Thats exactly the area we have been looking.
My wife lived in Orlando 25 years and misses it dearly.
Still looking....she mentions it like every day. Lol

We lived in Florida for 16 yrs. “95” - 2011. My 2 sons were 10 and 7 years old in 95. they grew up there. We lived in the Inverness area of Citrus county. My husband and I both agree if we ever went back we would like to be somewhere between St Augustine and Ormond Beach area. My youngest son would love it if we moved back to Florida. That’s home to him.

I grew up and spent much of my life just outside Jackson Hole Wyoming. Grand Teton national Park and Yellowstone were 30-60 min away. I miss it, but I do not miss the cold! I must say, I really like the St Augustine area and glad I landed here!
