When to up pot tree's.

I have been up potting a lot of my tree's. Knowing they will not grow much until next spring But trying to get a head start. Anyone else up pot during the colder month's?

Good to hear I am not the only one. I will have to buy more peat, bark and soil this weekend. Get's harder to find during the colder months.

I did for several years. I wish I had the discipline to keep doing it. Here's my take on it.

Pro's

It gets it out of the way. The worst part of spring opening is all the time dedicated to tediously potting up instead of just enjoying the good weather in the garden after months of cold

You can get right to giving them a head start without even having to move them. Just heat the space and add some water.... otherwise you're needing to do all the up potting in a crammed or cold space trying to figure out where to put everything. I prefer not to up pot too much once the plants are in full growth mode.

You can get any early granular fertilizing over with as the plant wont use it over the winter.

Con's

You have to do it now, instead of putting it off.

If the trees have to go to a storage space for the winter.... You're moving larger, heavier pots that will require more storage space.

Overall, I think if one can it's a better practice.... especially if the trees are dormant.

My $0.02.... which in this case is only worth $0.014 USD..... soooo

I wanted to ask a similar question, but I thought I would get criticized.

I am so eager to take my in-ground trees and move them to pots, but they still have a few leaves. Any thoughts?

That they have leaves shouldn’t be an issue… They will go dormant when they go dormant providing the conditions are right.

Are they going into pots permanently?
