Can anyone tell me why?

Vince #3, Negra De Agde and Beers Black budded out a month ago and have hardly any growth and my Improved Celeste budded 2 weeks ago and is surpassing the others.

I’m thinking it’s the up and down weather. Has it been fairly dry as well. I am hoping my trees will be rejuvenated with this week’s rainy weather.

Cooler nights could indeed have something to do with it, ground temperature.
The fact that Celeste is pretty much a southern staple could be why its doing better.

Yes it's dry. We've had some rain but not the "April Showers bring May flowers" kind.

I see there is rainy and chilly weather in the forecast this week for your location.
I probably need to add some compost on top of my in grounds to encourage them to grow stronger and healthier.

Those cooler nights isn't affecting your Green Michurinska. It's full of growth. Took this picture yesterday.

It doesnt seem to mind the cool temps like some others do.

You should look into mulch rings. They help keep the grass from growing around your trees and help you maintain 3-4 inches of mulch without getting spread around the yard. They're cheap at home Depot. They come in 40 foot roles. I love those things.

How long is each ring?

They come in rolls of 40 feet. If you want a 3 foot wide ring, it's 3 * 3.14 (PI). So you need about a 9 foot piece to make a 3 foot diameter ring. I started with 3 foot rings, but later added 2 foot diameter rings (2 * 3.14) = ~ 6 foot long piece.

The rolls usually come with plastic spikes as well to hammer into the ground and hold the mulch rings in place.

They are so worth it!

No. They didn’t die all the way but for some reason they are only budding out from the bottom. Not from roots but from the buds at the bottom. It’s weird. The trunk above them is green.

I have a few trees in potted plants that have growth coming up from the base. It has to be the cold weather.

I just got back from a road trip and with all of the rain WNC has been getting, both potted and in grounds trees are looking vibrant.

We could use the rain here! We've had the worse drought since 1870! We're over 28" less rain than average over the past 365 days. We need rain!
