What would Bugs Bunny have done?

So I've never really grown carrots before... at least not well. I decided to try again this year so use some raised bed space that gets freed up when the onions come out. The grew well. I'd been watching TheMellennialGardner who went on about how carrots get sweeter if you let them get hit by a frost. So I left them in the ground. I guess he was referring to a Carolina frost.... I went to dig a few out and the ground was solid. No way I was getting them out in one piece the normal way

I had this "thingy" that I welded together out of scrap a while back to pullout deep weeds. (it didn't work great. the angle steel is too thick) I ended up using it to drive down deep on both sides of each carrot. No way I was letting them go to waste

It worked! Carrots saved!

I do need to figure out what to do with that califlower that's doing the same thing my broccoli did ...

Bugs Bunny probably would’ve conned one of his buddies to do it for him. LOL
That was great idea you had to make that tool. Five stars for ingenuity and frugality in not letting those carrots go to waste. They’ll probably be even sweeter because they were grown by you. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Awwww 😊

In your last picture the leaves that are attached to the carrots, can the be chopped up and cooked in a soup like other greens? They look so delicious.
This is my first time really growing them successfully. I inquired as to whether they're edible and all around the answer was yes.... but until today I didn't know if they were any good.... I ate some raw and I really liked them. Sort of a parsley/carrot flavour. I won't be throwing them out. I don't know why it's not more widely accepted as good food.... as I'm finding with broccoli and cauliflower leaves.

That's cool, I have to make a special bed for carrots.
We have so many rocks, even small ones will redirect the carrot and make it a weird shape.
I may make a carrot bed though...love me some carrots Doc!

Yea, that is in the works for spring, a few more beds.
One thing that always gets me, paying for dirt.....I need to go get a truck load from Indiana. LOL

I'm with you on paying for dirt. What's the top soil like out in the woods there?

Also if you can get your hands on a chipper that helps a lot. Well ground wood/leaves and chicken poop make for good soil.

I used to get chips dropped from local arborists for free but the chips were bigger and took a while to break down. I was also worried that I might get black walnut chips that would kill my tomatoes and peppers.

Love this! I tried carrots in the spring but they boiled in the summer, just planed another set with my son a month ago, maybe I can get then to grow in our desert winter

I've had no luck with them in middle of summer even here. Late July, right when I pull my onions out seems to be the the best time for me.... Still warm enough to give them a good start but mature well into the cold. I wonder if you could grow them right through the winter?
