Distinguishing White Madeira from White Madeira #1

I was given this tree last September. The tag reads, "White Madeira". The lady who gave it to me is a beginner also and didn't have any more info.

Other than waiting for it to fruit, is there any way to tell them apart sooner?

Mine is starting to wake up. I brought it into the basement and put it under a grow light last week. I'm going to start putting it outside in the shade soon.

I assume that these are breba?

@ohiobruce Im going to draw a conclusion based on what I see in my White Madeira #1. That isnt WM#1 you have in that picture. I have multiple WM#1's from the source and I have only ever gotten 3 breba fruit off of all of them combined and that was from a 4 year old tree given a very, very early greenhouse headstart.

Is there a White Madeira without the #1 in the name? Or a White Madeira #2? Last year I bought a rooted cutting from TOJ and immediately after ordering I realized that there was not a #1 in the name at the TOJ website. I didn't know if I should feel dumb when I called Bass to make sure it was White Madeira #1 and not some other variant.

There is a White Madeira, and a White Madeira #2.
Neither are White Madeira #1, some people drop the #1 off the name not realizing that there are other varieties with similar names.

Thanks, Dan. Sounds like the tag was correct. Guess I'll see what develops.

I have a "WM#1" from a very reputable member. Now on its second year. It had a little figlet growing for maybe a week and then dropped. Are you saying I might not have a WM#1?

Well good news is that it did produce some Adriatic-type figs last summer. Does yours have any figlets???
Can’t say so yet. I really haven’t looked and it just started breaking bud I think a couple days ago. My tree does things on it’s own time, which I’m ok with.

To be honest there really aren't other white madeiras floating around in circulation. The original story of white madeira #1 does include a description of others, but to the best of my knowledge, white madeira #1 was the preferred one and the only one of them they chose to circulate.

Sometimes people include the #1, and other times theybleave it off. It should be the same fig. I can't guarantee that the person you got it from didn't mix it up...That being said, I have had breba off of my White Madeira #1s. Not a lot like Desert King, or Olympian or anything like that.

Thanks, Kevin. There sure are a lot of interesting stories about fig varieties out there.

"White and white madeira " is different enough of a name...although very odd, to be not confused. Shortening that to "White Madeira " would be mislabeling to me
They've been selling this White & White Madeira for a long time, have you seen anyone else offer it ? Maybe a lot of Mislabeled trees out there because a name gets shortened up as they get passed around.
I do have a White Madeira #2 that was sold by a pretty reputable guy from Illinois. Fruited it as first year tree last season, curious to see how it turns out as it matures

Bass’ website says it’s also know as White Madeira #1 under the description.

I was perusing One Green World. They have it listed as “White Madeira”, then under the description:

“Given to us as White Madeira #1 for those of you who are interested in that information. We just don’t have any other White Madeira’s in our collection so we dropped the “#1”.”

The new people can thank OGW for adding to the confusion.

If thats the one from Michael, he named it that well after, because it is a seedling with WM#1 as one of the parents. Not a plant circulating for long, or that many prople have. How was the fruit? I know he wasn't sure it was common

Different ones, Micheal has renamed his seedling to Madeira Verde and it has been reported common. I have that one too, I have not fruited it yet. It has a really nontypical Adriatic leaf shape.
The White Madeira #2 that I got was from a collection in Illinois, Saw it very briefly mentioned a couple times on video. But part of my point is that it is a White Madeira named variety that was offered in public sale. I got little information on it but was able get the understanding that the timelines don't align to it also being Micheals variety.
