Question about peat

This may be a stupid question, but here goes. I recently bought a bag of peat moss and it was a really light brown/tan color. My first bag was a dark brown. Same brand/product. Is there a difference and if so is one better for rooting cuttings? Not saying I could pick and choose, but just to know for future reference.

Could it be one was dry, one was moist?

They both were fairly dry when I opened them and the light color barely darkened when I wet it. Definitely not to the extent of the darker bag at least.

Here's what my peat looks like. I think this is the brand Premier. This is relatively dry. yellow HDX tote lid for color comparison purposes.

So I did some google detective work and it says that the darker stuff is more likely farther along in the decomp process. The darker stuff will hold more water, the lighter will be longer strands and more airy.

hmmm, we really need to know what color yellow that is before answering since it can affect the brown.

I'm pretty sure this was a standard color in the Crayola 64-pack

I have seen color differences before, but have never noticed any difference in performance.
Could be harvested from a different area or different time of the season.
Hard to say.
