I'm guessing no HOA?

All that talk about what you can and can't plant in your yard in @grasshopper 's Ready For Spring thread reminded me of this from a few years back. I imagine you couldn't get away with this at your place then?

Seriously, I'm so proud of what he's done. When the city is involved and the news people come out might be a sign that you're doing it right! 😃

I'm a big front yard gardener. I mean... I keep it neat and my neighbours seem to appreciate it... I just figure I have it to use, so I should.

this is funny, i live in an HOA and they are strict with what we can plant in the front, so this year i am planning to plant white poms and green figs in strategic spots MUYAHHAHA the fruits will blend in with the flowering trees on the block.

It's probably the 5 gallon white bucket look they don't like. I wonder if they were all in black containers if there would be such an uproar.

He's got half plastic barrels right down curbside on city property. I am surprised he got away with that. Although people here are encouraged to plant between the curb and the sidewalk.

Oh, that makes me so mad!

He doesn’t have an HOA.
His pots are in tidy rows and they all match. Unlike my ramble of plants. I do try to keep it tidy, but there is only so much I can do, given my very low physical resources.

But seriously, his was not bad at all. I thought it was quite nice. I’m sure he’s not calling the city on his neighbors, planting ugly plastic flowers or putting up plastic lawn decor.

Do they have so little to worry about in their lives that they would cause trouble for someone enjoying their passion in gardening?

I bet they would like it a lot less if he decided to let it become a all natural “meadow garden” and go to Weeds!

I grew up in North Dakota and remember the story about a development that cropped up abutting a farm. Mind you, the farm was there for generations, it was the housing development that was new.

However, the people in the housing development gave endless hardship and headache to the farmer, because they did not like the two days of stink from the fertilizer, and they did not like the sound and the dust of the harvester.

They protested and sued and literally made it so bad for him that he had to spend so much of his time to defend himself that it took away from his time farming, and that is one thing a farmer does not have, is extra time.

After two years of legal fights with the angry folks in the new homes, the farmer decided that he would stop farming the land adjacent to the housing development for crops.

So, instead of a field of growing plants, the farmer decided to turn that abutting field into a pig farm!
I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a pig farm, but the moral of the story is that it could always be worse, and don’t ever mess with a farmer.

They just don't understand. There was a period where everything was supposed to look like a manicured carpet, managed with the harshest chemicals and no consideration for how it affected us. There's a lot of the western world that's still stuck there. The good news is that when the city was called... and even though he's growing off his property... they told him to carry on. I think we're getting to a place where food crops aren't considered inappropriate.... and even bad form to try and appose them.

I agree that there should be limits to maintain cleanliness. Maybe not enforced by the neighbours though... :)

When I lived in NJ, the city planted fruit trees (plums, pears) along the sidewalks for the "wildlife". City was responsible to maintain those trees. First, they picked the wrong varieties which are susceptible to a fungal knot disease. Second, they didn't pick or clean up the fruits littered on the street. Think flies and slippery, sticky mess when you walk in front of your house.

I picked the fruits when I moved there, shared them with the neighbors. I also trimmed back the trees with clear diseased branches. Then, we got a note about don't touch the city owned trees because they are city properties and city is responsible for the maintenance that they clearly didn't perform.

I also got a violation on planting beans on a chain linked fence because a city worker suggested I didn't tend to the lawn and caused the weed(beans) to overgrow. My family was on a trip when the summon came. If we didn't fix it in a week, they would start fining us $100 daily. The summon was pretty cryptic. I had to call their office to find out exactly what they thought was wrong and explained we couldn't be there to fix whatever they think it is in a week's time. To be clear, it wasn't even my lawn but my neighbors. The beans on there were growing in a pot on my side.

Sometimes, you just cant win!

It's weird... I'm in a nice neighbourhood, but nobody bugs me here.... Of course, I am the guy who stands out front and yells at his trees in Italian....so, maybe you want to try that? :)

I lived in an Italian neighborhood with an Italian mayor. That was probably why they put up fruit trees for the "wildlife". The city worker was probably passing my house on his way to lunch at a famous local Italian restaurant - just 50 ft from my house.

My favourite line.... "The homeowner says he gives the fruits to family and friends, but neighbours don't buy it"

Don't buy it!?!? Do the neighbours think he's converting them in to plutonium?

An Italian neighbourhood? In NJ? I can't imagine? 🤣

My town is like this too. We have a law that says "weeds" (undefined) cant be taller than 8 inches. I do a lot of native gardening and so I have gotten a summons a few times to court for it. Its absurd. I understand if its just completely overgrown lawn but I have clearly manicured beds and there is a lot of landscaping done (by me).

I also live on a corner lot and so my vegetables etc are in my front yard. Well see how it goes this year. I put it raised beds and my driveway will look like his with my fig trees too. Heres what they looked like BEFORE the blizard started today. You can also see the remenents of one of my native beds dormant for winter innthe back20260213_092509.jpg

Personally, as long as he maintains it (yard, plants) and doesn’t let it get too overgrown and wild. I don’t care what he does. It’s his property and isn’t hurting anyone. Try communicating with them instead of complaining and she might actually get some figs to enjoy herself.
