Cull 2026

Wow, im surprised to see Crozes on this list!
Variety recommendations are a good start, but this is why you have to have trial a bunch of varieties yourself. Your environment, your growing methods will produce different results and everyone’s tastebuds are different. I’m not a collector so I don’t need a ton of varieties. I would rather have multiples of my favorites. It’s fun to trial. It’s also kind of a pain and gets expensive. I fully expect to see some of my rankings change here from Texas. It’s also why I know someone’s “best” list and cull list, while interesting, doesn’t necessarily help me.

Everyone's tastes are different - for me it is very similar to the other Mt Etnas that I am growing - Azores Dark, RLBV and San Donato de Ninea. And the San Donato De ninea is consistently better for me in the Texas heat. And probably even the other 2 are a notch higher and I desperately needed rootstock :). Picture of a San Donato De Ninea.

The Pennsylvania fig fest and the Lancaster Fig and Pawpaw festival both drew over 400 People each
Unfortunately for people like me and mech thats 3+ hour drive sometimes 4 depending on where and when you drive. I can get to the maryland border in 45minutes so even those theres a lot of pa fig people theres about me mech and 1 or 2 other people within a huge distance. I dont have any connections in maryland or know anyone in maryland that may be close to cumberland. Ive searched the groups for local people have been to plenty of farmers markets have spread the word thru my work, the owner owns 50+ businesses. Ive talked to my chef at work who loves figs. He knew 2 people with one tree each, both passed away. Ive lived here for 40 years and dont know a single person of almost 50k in the city that grows a single fig let alone collects or is a fig fanatic.
Heres a fun fact in my research of my local fig community ...
Altoona unknown sold by bill lauris was brought by the depaolis family in the late 1800s. The grandson is a friend of a mutual friend. The house is sold the mother tree is gone from what we know.
As crazy as me an mech sound theres just barely anyone in our area that is a fig nut.

The DMV Fig Growers group on Facebook has an active For Sale or Trade section that may help you out. In addition to DC, Maryland, and Virginia, we attract people from NJ, PA, and DE. Some drive 4-5 hours to attend our Fig Fests. You may want to consider joining.

Here’s some links to previous Fig Fests if you’re interested: https://figfanatic.com/threads/dmv-spring-2026-fig-fest.2897/ Just a note that the venue will change as our previous hosts closed. Look for more details coming soon.

I think the DMV fig festival maybe the same driving distance as the PA one for me. I have family and friends living in Pottstown though, so I might go there when it's time for cull.

Same for the figfrolic event. I drove 4 hours ^to TN to meet fanatics like myself. Someone more fanatical than me came from Canada.

People are jerks. I planted watermelon in my yard once and someone came by and stole the whole plant.(it was small still) they didn’t even fill in the hole.
That is wild. When I first read it, I thought they just stole a watermelon but a plant, that is crazy.

Another fanatic flew in from Texas and back to Texas with a few treepots in her checked luggage. She also got a 3 gal potted tree from the gift table, pulled it out of the pot and put a bare root tree in the same luggage. Her husband was quite understanding with her addiction.

I really like Crozes and think it has great cherry/berry flavor. My tree will be going in ground this spring. However you are not the first person who has told me that they were culling it.

That’s why I think it’s important to try different varieties for yourself and growing situation. Now in addition to Croze you just added San Donato de Ninea to my wish list….🤣 Will it ever end….🤣😂

for me … once having those tried and true production figs established, trying new varieties is all the fun. I know full well that I might not like some… but it’s fun experimenting and seeing what will do well for me. And its a special treat when a new one is so good and grows so well that it makes it into the regular rotation…

What would you say that is for you? 1 out of 10? 20? 50?
