Not often talked about

I was browsing through Harvey's list to see what is sold out...out of plain curiosity. lol

I noticed a few that are not talked about much that I personally consider to be very good figs.
So...one I'd like to mention that is still available and I would recommend to everyone is Galicia Negra.

Not only is the flavor very good but the inside of the figs is a really cool color usually with a darker border just under the skin.
Pretty tight osiole and a pretty good producer.
The one below could have stayed on a bit longer but I couldn't stop giving it a squeeze. LOLGalicia Negra 1 2023.jpgGalicia Negra 2 2023.jpgGalicia Negra 3 2023.jpg

Anyone else see ones still available they would recommend?

Adriatic JH, CLBC, MBVS, and Smith.
If you can get the first 2 to ripen, it’s a treat. Both MBVS and Smith are productive.

HDA is probably there because it’s such a slow grower. Galicia Negra is probably still there because it takes like 5 years to get figs growing it from a cutting. Airlayer cuts like 2-3 years off that.
I've been growing HdA for a few years. In my experience it's not a slow grower, to me it's actually pretty vigorous but it is tough to root. I have it potted up in #15 pot.

Is it true that it's about a three year wait to get figs? And not very productive?....

I’ve grown Galicia Negra for several years now. It’s not as productive as I’d like. I’ve always put that down to my shorter season. It’s and excellent fig
I've got a 5 year old Galicia Negra, it's average production for me potted , But it does give good high quality ripened fruit. I'm going to graft up a couple nodes onto vigorous rootstock to see if the production increases.
I've got Neustra Senora de Carman that is 4-5 yrs old that's grafted onto Smith roots. That thing pumps out fruit and I've heard other growers say NSdC isn't the greatest producer for them. So encouraged to try experimenting with Galicia Negra.

Is this everybody's experience with Galicia N. - 5 years to fruiting from the cutting?

That's a long wait.

I have to agree it was slower to start now its right there beside my other bests for vigor. Mine responded well to over fetilizing also.

That has not been my experience, I did not have to wait 5 yrs for fig. lol
Maybe only 2 for real, I grew it from cutting.

So let me just throw this out there about Galicia Negra, it is a little slow to produce, but...I say root it, give it the time needed and eat all your other figs while it's doing it's thing.
It is certainly not the only shy to produce fig out there.

I think you'll be happy you did. :)
