Anyone growing this variety? I’ve read up the description on Harvey’s list, sounds delicious but possibly expensive. A rare striped fig. My question is it a long ripening fig? I can’t grow it here if it’s a late fig.
 
It's like a slightly elongated Panachee, and a little earlier. An ancient variety from Elba. The name means melon, possibly because the shape resembles some types of melon.
 
I grow popone. It is an interesting one. The figs and wood have nice variegations to them, and then get more normal yellow looking as they get closer to fully ripening. Mine hasn't been very productive yet, but it is just probably where I had the tree. I don't really have a good idea when it ripens normally yet. Mine was very early the first year, then Mid-late last year
 
Honestly… it’s not the best tasting fig IMO. I would only get it if you want a striped fig. It has very little taste and I’m likely to get rid of mine at some point. Mine ripens about mid-season, early September, depends though on when your figs wake up in spring.
 
I have this one and it’s very productive. Earlier compared to other variegated figs.

it doesn’t taste anything like Panachee though, especially when uncaprified.

Yours ripens earlier maybe because you’re in zone 10B. My area was 6b but new map is now 7A. Right now it’s been so cold they should rezone it again to zone 0A. 😂🤣😂🤣

It seems like it’s a really rough winter back east. I’m trying not to talk weather to my friends and family on the east coast. We are in full spring mode since after the new year storm.

This cold since it arrived last week has been worse then an uninvited guest who came for visit but now refuses to leave.😡😡😡😡😡

I've fruited this the last two years. Last years was a decent crop. Its sugary with a light berry flavor. Elongated striped fig that is visibly less striped when ripe, more yellow when ready to pick. Has avoid in he middle and a pretty long hang time. It does not taste like panache at all. It does start ripening for me mid/late August, which I would say probably translates to early/mid Sept for you.
