High school cuttings update

@ktrain so what instructions did you give to the AG teacher so that the kids can propagate the cuttings.
Every spring, I make it a habit of buying plants from HS FFAs and would buy fig plants if the local HS have any for sale.
I just gave him the basics and told him to call me with any questions.
He did say he never rooted figs.
But he did a great job...not to different from other items.

Yep, even if it's not my own. lol

Not sure if they get to take any home.
But I'm going to see if he wants to keep doing them every year.

I hope they get to take them home! What a great opportunity!

I was a plant science major at U of D for a spell and we did fundraisers... what we didn't sell we took home. My mom loved having around 500 snap dragons planted all over the property! :)

I work as event staff at a university. 175 student staff. Installed a garden and orchard to teach them to grow and experience top tier produce. I have collected some great figs to share with them. We will be learning propagating and grafting for our figs as well as care. Always grateful for any donated time, info, or plants to teach with. Can’t wait to blow their minds with my figs!

I’m in SoCal if anyone knows any good resources please reach out! Trying to help decrease food insecurity in my community. Have a great new year!

That's great, we would love to see some pics if you have any. :)

Nice to see people having the same ideas as me. I'm doing this too, but from cuttings of my trees with my elementary school children I'm teaching. To be honest, I was quite surprised how many children took interest in my hobby and found it interesting, given the times we live in now and especially the children are growing up.

I think it’s the fact that it’s something new to them and we all know how magical it seems to watch a stick grow roots and turn into a tree.

I started sending mine home today and was really surprised at how excited the kids were. I gave them basic care instructions and they actually listen to me for once. And they asked some really good questions.

This is so cool. Like @ktrain said, it tugs at the heart strings. It reminds me of my neighbors who shared fig trees and cuttings with me. Good on you for sharing. Kevin, you didn't just give them cuttings, you might have given someone a hobby that will help them through tough times, or an heirloom they will pass on for generations. Bravo.

Thank you man, I really hope so.
I hope it brings out the gardener in them and they take interest in all that is growing your own food. :)

Love that others are like me, subtly influencing as many future growers as possible by luring them with our figs among other delightful crops. Keep spreading the love and knowledge!
100% ... I'm going to ask if he wants to keep doing this every season. 😁
