CLOSED FOR NOW: TREASURE HUNT FOR PORTUGUESE UNKNOWNS- 20+ WINNERS EXPECTED

@Opiem10
@GoodFriendMike

First, thank you for another fun contest! It was like a lightning round of getting to know about people fast. I also laughed at myself, because I thought this whole time one person was a woman by their user name, and he is not a she, lol.

Second, I just realized that I was allowed to win only because Mike gave up his win, and because there are duplicates of most of them except for #5,

Can I please these to Mike from my package:

variety #1- 1 cutting
variety #2- 1 cutting
Variety #3- 1 cutting
Variety #4 -2 cuttings

Thanks 😊!
Young Jin
Don’t worry about the initial 20 member winner limit. I should be able to cover everyone with the sticks Rocco and I cut.

I set the 20 winner limit because I knew I’d miss someone, somewhere and I did.

Just root all 13 cuttings and make new friends when you have to give some away.

John, I only need one thin cutting of each. My plan is to graft them all onto a single tree so I can evaluate the fruit. Thank you for your generosity and all the hard work you put into this.

Topfigs,
"Thin" may be relative and different from member to member. Being that I am not a grafter, can you estimate the thickness you prefer? I'll try to match up as best I can.

Any extra cuttings you don't need will be passed on to another unexpecting member.

A brief summary, In about 4 hours we had 20 fig fanatic winners, one waitlisted (who will almost certainly have a package available), 5 former SouthernFigsForum members (also members here), and a few packages directly from Rocco that went out in the mail a day or so ago.

That's over 350 cuttings of unknown Portuguese heirloom cuttings that will be sent out as quickly as I can. If I don't already have your address in my files, I will message you to obtain that information.

After shoveling over 6 inches of snow and trying to manage this giveaway, first, I need to watch some football.

Thanks to all participants for not only posting but in some cases, needing to reach out to someone you might not have known before.
Thank you so much for all your efforts! You had to be glued to the site for those 4 hrs plus the hours of harvesting the cuttings, packaging, and shipping. That’s a LOT of work! Grateful for your generosity and love of figs.

Please grow them and if you have success share them. I rather see you and the people you share them with happy and enjoying good fig's. I do hope to see some photo's of there growth and of the figs. Sometimes seeing others happy makes it worth it. Keep growing. :)

John @Opiem10 has outdone himself this season!!!

The time and effort he has put in so far is an inspiration and a real blessing to the community (I hope your little elves are helping :)).

Thank you John! You set a high bar my friend ;)

As some have mentioned, the season is far from over - and so are the giveaways!

CCGP will be CONTINUING the GIVEAWAYS - Right on through the Holidays and into the NEW YEAR!!!

SO Please Stay Tuned Everyone!!!

UPDATE: The first packages of cuttings were just dropped off at the USPS or UPS Store. The winners and recipients of those cuttings have been provided with an e-mail with a tracking # for each padded mailer. I hope to get the remainder of UNK Portuguese cuttings out by Wednesday.

Next week, I will go through the remaining inventory and likely reach out to relatively random members to see if they too are interested in trying several of these unknowns.

Recommendations for all recipients:
1) Wash the cuttings when you receive them. Several of these trees were growing under large deciduous trees and were not thinned for several years. As a result, there may be a dirt buildup on some of the cuttings. I prioritized getting cuttings out to members over washing them.
2) Cuttings were tied, taped, or banded by variety. However, only one cutting per bundle was numbered. You may want to label each cutting before washing. Some of the cuttings may not have marked well either if there was a dirt film on the stick. After washing, the greenish bark will show much better.
3) Many of the cuttings could approach 15 inches. If they are long and have 6 or more nodes, you might be able to cut them in half, doubling your haul.

Feel free to share your rooted cuttings with FF members. Some of us will be more successful than others.
