Where's your source on buckets? I remember they were sometimes a $1 at the hardware store, but is seems like they run closer to $5 these days. I've heard rumors of Chick-fil-a or Dunk-n-donuts (neither are around here) having free buckets.. I see them sometimes on the highway, LOL
The restaurant near my house had some near their dumpster and I just asked the owner if I can get them. Customers usually look at me funny when I load the buckets in my car. I use the square kitty litter ones. They seem to be holding up so far.

my wife works at a cafe which has some food... any ideas what they buy that might coem in a bucket LOL i'll have to ask...
Ive had a really hard time keeping grow bags wet enough for even my tomatoes. If you do choose to use growbags I recommend sewing a waterproof fabric around it at least 2/3 down on the inside. This would make sure the water get to the bottom, which literally never happened in my growbags before that modification

No confidence, I am just too lazy and too broke to do it in stages. It worked very well for me in my climate.
I’ve bought from harbor freight when on sale or free with purchase but usually go to Lowes and they are around $5. Still cheaper than a new large nursery pot. If I find they only last a season or two I might switch to nursery pots and less varieties. Currently I’m not spending anything hardly, just making do with what I have.Where's your source on buckets? I mainly use those. It helps here during the rainy season. But the dryer months I will spend a lot of time watering.
I have not used them before but next season gonna use them.. I am gonna try Lou’s style.. bury them in ground in the grow pots and pull them out end of season..

Irrigation? I plan on setting up irrigation and water daily and multiple times if needed
not even just irrigation, the water would basically spill out the sides before they reached the bottom and just never penetrates the bottom. What I would do if i used them again is sew a water proof material of some sort as a liner to at least 2/3 down the sides. like a cylinder so the water makes it all the way down. or
Try a different medium. Ones high in peat will do as you are saying. Others will become almost evenly moist. Pots, growbags both work great. But all depends on the medium you use.
